I’m having a beer at a local brewery while my ‘25 Bronco HE gets a windshield replaced. Geico recommended Safelite and said my deductible would be $50 if Safelite couldn’t repair it. Yeah, no. The reviews on local Safelite branches are sketchy at best.

I looked for the best reviewed locally- owned glass shop in my area and settled on Patriot Auto Glass in Ashburn, VA. Veteran-owned and the reviews put Safelite to shame. Guy took all of 5 seconds to tell me I needed replacement because the crack went over the seal.

I told them I wanted “Bronco glass” and he knew what I meant and said he’d done several Broncos. They do camera calibration in-house.

Just an FYI on the cost breakdown:

OEM Bronco windshield $ 544.57

Install labor $ 295

Dymanic ADAS recalibration $ 325

Pre-tax total $ 1164.57

I’ll update on how it turns out and will update again on how Geico handles the claim after I opted not to use their anointed autoglass company.

EDITED: There are problems with the install that were not immediately evident. I will revise when a resolution is reached.

I went through this 7 years ago with my GTI. In the first 9 months of ownership I put two windshields in (due primarily to crappy highway maintenance). And nobody had a 3rd party piece; the only one available was factory, for significantly more than $550.

Yikes. I’m already inclined to take a look at windshield protection film now.

I was looking at that and I got a chip in mine before I pulled the trigger. I filled the chip an it hasn't changed any, it's been over a year.

In 2007 or so I bought a fox body mustang without a windshield. They charged me like $155 to come out an install the new one. What a change!

I used to be into OBS Fords and I would buy the glass for $80 and DIY. I'm getting a little fatigued with how expensive everything is for the 6G.

One of the benefits of living in Florida - zero deductible on glass, zero cost. All covered by your insurance and cannot raise your rates...just so fellow Floridians are aware.

Cool, glad it worked out! I had to replace my windshield 3-years ago. USAA recommended Safelight and my local shop in Arlington did a fantastic job. They used OEM "Bronco glass" which was a no-brainer and even transferred the original oval production line "Proudly Made in the U.S.A. Michigan Assembly Plant" sticker from my old windshield! I just looked up the pricing for comparison (which is similar to yours given the 3-year inflation gap window) and noticed they had emailed me the Certificate of Recalibration. Also, no fitment issues on my install and total out of pocket was $100.

OEM Bronco windshield $ 564.71

Install labor $ 116 + Kit $30

Dymanic ADAS recalibration $ 250

Pre-tax total $ 960.71

There was a minor fitment issue inside the cab with the plastic box around the camera not being snug to the windshield. They corrected it easily when I pointed it out, popped it into place fully and it fits perfectly now. It was a Friday afternoon so I’ll give ‘em a pass.

That wouldn't have saved my windshield from this:
Ford Bronco Windshield replacement @ 3,600 miles & cost. RCJJwOm

A rock got flipped up by a truck coming the other way on the highway.

I had Safelite replace mine and I was totally happy with the result. I'm guessing that the quality varies from one Safelite place to the next.

...which simply means the rates are artificially inflated right up front, and you're paying for EVERYONE ELSE'S windshield replacement.

Safelite messed up my non Bronco windshield replacement resulting in a dead battery, towing, etc. charges. Took me several weeks of haggling to get $500 refund for the extra charges due to dead battery.

It does vary to the point that you’re in the lucky minority that didn’t have a problem.

I tried to use Safelite when a rock went through my 1/4 glass. The estimate they wrote was for $1200 and the part number on the estimate was for a Ram rear glass. I used USA Autoglass and they did the job next day with OE glass and charged about $400. Shop around folks.

I've heard FL has some of the highest insurance rates in the nation.
