Why so many used Wildtraks?

The Bronco is not for everyone but it must appeal to a broader segment than the hardcore off roaders or off roaders in general. There would be no Wrangler or Bronco in that case as there would not be enough units sold to justify their existence. These trucks spend the majority of their lives maybe all of their lives on road. Some have said they should buy something else. if you want 4A go buy an AWD Subaru. If they do that the production line will be closed in a year or two.

I remember seeing years ago (pre covid) that the Wrangler had a shockingly high rate of non-repeat buyers...so I think a lot people buy into an perceived image and when they get it, it doesn't work for various reasons. I'm sure the Bronco will fall into that camp to a degree, but hopefully not

Exactly this.

Its kind of a turd for the price point. There are other capable 4x4 off road capable vehicles at this price point that do offer far better luxury features, and you could actually have a phone call in them driving down the freeway.

I'm extremely disappointed in the build quality for the price point, and there was no option to test drive one prior to ordering. If I knew it would be such a turd, I would have ordered a base line Bronco, or just gone with a Defender.

To your point, cheap plastics (all over the vehicle, including the hard top) and wind noise is really, really bad driven at speed. My 65 convertible has less wind noise than my hard top Wildtrak. The ride quality I don't have any issue with, quite happy with that.

If you work on the hard top, you can get it to quiet down. My 2023, so far is still quieter than my 2021, but my 2021 is finally approaching the normal end of the spectrum. It's not nearly as bad as it used to be. Adjusting the top can make large differences and finding the places where noise intrusion is happening can be challenging.

Mind you, it shouldn't require the customer to sort it out, but you can improve it dramatically. The wind noise was my primary problem with the 2021, and it was next level horrible in the beginning. Thankfully my 2023 is much quieter and gives me a good baseline.

The cheap plastics on the interior do scratch way too easily, but it is at the end of the day an off-road truck. The interior otherwise is actually pretty good, it doesn't rattle or take away from the driving experience, it comes apart quickly and easily, and affordable upgrades can be made to mitigate the shortcomings (a nice padded center rest was $20 and metal door pockets were $30, for example).

The wind noise is loud enough on my soft top that I'm actually considering mud terrains. Figuring how much worse can it really be?

They aren't... On my two door, the soft top actually turned out to be far worse with noise than the bad hard top. Often, it was like being inside a bass drum, especially when going 70-80 MPH.

Spot on. In the ski industry we have taken color ways from vehicle manufacturers for decades. There was just an article in an industry publication about SUVs and ski width. Consumers, as a whole, are aspirational - they buy something for the conditions that they WANT to experience - not for the actual conditions that they are actually participating in.

With skis, it means that they are purchasing skis 90mm underfoot or greater, with the aspiration to ski powder. In actuality, they are skiing a 2D surface, on a ski that is less than optimal for those conditions and actually hinders their skill development.

My wife will be taking her Subaru in bad weather days in order to not deal with hopping between 2H and 4H.

Everything that you said is spot on from my standpoint as a retired product developer who tracked sales data across several domains.

With regards to Subaru, your family will likely be much better served by Subaru's AWD system than the 4A option, so I wouldn't beat yourself up. In speaking to a few PLM's the Bronco is a RWD system until power is needed to the front wheels. And no torque vectoring (which, on Subaru, I think is only WRX and STi). It is much more a basic AWD system.

I was debating getting snows on the Bronco for winter. However I have other vehicles much better suited to winter driving. Driving over Red Mountain Pass and Million Dollar HWY several times per month in winter, and the long empty stretch between Delta and Carbondale, CO, I don't want a compromise.

I'm seeing many used Broncos finally being listed for $3-5K under original MSRP. This wasn't true 6 months ago.

I'm also seeing MANY new Broncos sitting on the lot. For ones at MSRP they take a week or two to sell. For those with markup they can sit for 3+ months or more (like my abandoned order).

Not the case up North, the common websites I look around are still trying to sell Base Sasquatch Broncos for $55K+

It’s me, I’m people! I have a bronco on order and haven’t had a chance to test drive one yet, so I’ve been doing a ton of research while I await and getting very personal with their badges when parked. I also whole heartedly agree that people buy what they want and not necessarily based on their lifestyle. It’s me again! Hoping to test drive one soon before committing to a dream.

That makes total sense. Most people seem to purchase a Bronco as a fashion accessory - they live in an urban or suburban environment and want to project an image. In reality, they’d be better served by a family oriented SUV or minivan.

If that "image" is FUN, then yes. Our WT is an extra vehicle. We have family car (Escalade) and fun (sports) cars. We've had Range Rovers and CTS-V but those didn't offer open air experience. In SoCal the top is off 9 months out of the year. Surf boards on top, banging around beach town - way fun. Few vehicles offer this experience. The WT is relatively inexpensive for this area, cheap to own, maintain, insure but offers enough creature comfort and safety features for the family. I am not a Ford guy to be clear but even I was impressed by the WT.
