Why do we hate Auto Start/Stop so much?

They have an electric pump to assist in the start/stop is activated only. The mechanical pump is what runs the transmission in normal run operation, from what I read:
" The auxiliary transmission fluid pump does not have enough flow to engage the clutch, but can only hold the clutch in the engaged position when the engine stops and the main oil pump stops supplying pressure "

What happens if I am wrong? You've allowed your engine to shut down, you've reduced your footprint a little bit and you have made the world a better place.

What happens if YOU are wrong? Our grandkids have nowhere to live.

I'll take choice A and do my best to make sure MY grandkids AND your's have a planet to live on.

If you have two Broncos and one uses A.S.S. and one does not you are going to tell me the one that started a Bronco 3x more is going to last just as long.

If that is some people's logic then milage of a engine should not matter since a engine with 200k would have the same amount of life as one with 20k?

I've always been uncomfortable with vehicles with Auto Start/Stop. The first time I experienced the "feature" it was somewhat disconcerting having the vehicle stop running at a red light. At first, I fought against it. Although I never fully reprogrammed it out of existence, I'd still generally turn it off each time I'd drive the vehicle. The Bronco version of ASS seems to be a little less aggressive than some of my former vehicles. However, there are still little annoyances such as it turning off the engine as I stop in my driveway, only to immediately turn back on as the transmission is shifted to Park.

But why so much vitriol for a "feature" that is pretty benign. Certain consumers seem to hate this capability. Is it because so many of us from the older generations have been taught that starting/stopping the engine is wasteful or even actually damaging to an engine? Or because we are stubborn and don't like being told what to do by new technology that is often perceived to be imposed on us by the "nanny state"?

Clearly, the new technology and engine tolerances make this capability non-destructive in terms of engine wear and tear. It also, on the whole, leads to some incremental MPG gains.

So why do so many of us still feel angst or discomfort with ASS?

I will believe this after theses model broncos are around long enough to find out how long starters will last... I made a good career of repairing failed "tech", I don't trust it yet... no matter how much I think I'm "used to it", there is a small jolt of panic when I detect the engine turning off at an intersection..

Well, I have had 3 cars with this feature and while I have disabled it on the Bronco, the previous 2 were partially the reason why. Both failed and left me stranded at red lights. 1st was a 2019 Sierra, albeit really high mileage vehicle (80k in 3 years) and the 2nd a Lincoln MKC ( wife's former car).

I gave the Bronco ASS a chance and took a more methodical approach. For reasons I will not go into here my driving route is almost 100% identical week over week, route distance and traffic. I took a 2 week MPG average using the ASS system and a 2 week without. To my surprise the 2 weeks without came out to 19.1 and with ASS 18.3. I repeated this process a month or so later with the same result. Upon reflection, I attributed it to being more in tune with the car and possibly the AC/ accessories/charging system not having to work as hard to compensate for being starved at intersections. Full disclosure I also DO indeed believe based on advice from a few family engineers (one at Lucid -formerly at GM, the other at Caterpillar) that ASS does indeed lead to increased engine and engine component wear over time. Since there was no MPG benefit in my case I installed the below item and have not looked back.

i find it extremely unlikely that any caterpillar products use ASS although they have some serious crazy electric and hybrid heavy machinery

Exactly! They were playing around with the idea (he is in the R&D division) and they saw the type of wear on engines and components that led them to scrapping the entire idea after 2 years of research.

Logic does dictate that it wouldn't last as long, BUT, it would not reduce by anywhere near the 3x number you used. Since the engine is warm to running temps, it's not a "cold start" and oil is lubing internal parts, also the engine uses an electronic pump to help regulate temps while the engine is stopped. Look, you don't have to like it, and it's your call to disable it...I'm not going to question that....I'm simply stating that the old school "it'll kill the engine" just isn't correct.

For one, if I have the AC on (which is almost always - because Phoenix) the last thing I want is for the engine and AC to turn off.

Secondly, it doesn't start fast enough, so if you move your foot from the brake to the gas the car lurches a bit, because my foot is faster than the stupid ASS.

And Thirdly, while it is true that the starter is likely sized for such abuse. It kills batteries faster. This is why we have an expensive AGM battery, to try to eek out a bit more life in spite of the harsher start/stop cycle.

You also are aware Volcanos erupting emit a ton of CO2 back into the atmosphere right, thus negating “the savings” ass provides

Nope, they just idle on the job site... a lot. But like I said R&D scrapped the idea due to wear issues.
