Why do so many people remove TPMS from take-offs?

Im on the hunt for gloss black SAS wheels/tires. I want like new minimal mile take-offs. I like the idea of factory balanced, etc.

So many sets I have found have had TPMS removed.

To me, it devalues the set and Im far less willing to pay up for them as I have to mess with buying TPMS, having them installed and having the set rebalanced.

TPMS are pretty cheap and it seems counter intuitive to me to pull them from the take-offs to install in different wheels.

I feel like I'm crazy or something.

But, WHY?

While I understand what you mean and agree it makes a sale easier with sensors included, there is no need to rebalance the tires. You can just break the top bead to install sensors. Tire never moves on the wheel.

What are you going to do with your sensors when you score new wheels?

...and what does it matter? If it "devalues" them, you end up back in the same spot when you buy new sensors. So it's a wash.


I bought new sensors for my Methods, but at the time I thought I might use the stock wheels for winter driving with better winter rated tires mounted. So it made sense then.

I am with the OP. Breaking the bead is something that most home garages are not equipped to accomplish. Plus you have no guarantee that the original owner removed them in a manner that allows you to skip rebalancing.

It is not that much the cost of taking the wheels to a garage to have them rebalanced as much as the hassle factor of having to do so.

It is not that much the cost of taking the wheels to a garage to have them rebalanced as much as the hassle factor of having to do so.

Either way I’m not disagreeing. I sold my take offs as is with the sensors and just bought new ones because I knew they’d be easier to sell.

I would keep the original sensors if I was buying new wheels or new tires. I've had issues with some of the aftermarket ones. Most tire places will just relocate them for free if you are buying wheels or tires. Most tire places also overcharge for their knock off sensors.

I’ve bought oem sensors for my wheels
And tires and my wife’s wheles and tires

sold one set 2000, the other 2250 complete

I have no idea why people go through the trouble to pull them

Pro-tip:

Government surplus yards is a great place to find TPMS sensors. It just so happens most governments buy Ford, and the Ranger and F-150 happens to be a very common work truck for state and local governments. Both use the same TPMS sensor as the Bronco.

Salvage yards also used to be a really good place to find sensors, since... well... F-150 is the #1 vehicle sold in the country. But they eventually caught on to the whole microchip shortage and started charging through the roof for the sensors. In the past I could pull an entire bucket worth of sensors for a few dollars per sensors and sell them online, but not the case anymore.

I never understood this either as it cost more to remove the oem sensors and mount to a new wheel set as oppose to buying new TPMS

In general, people remove them as they do not know any better.

TPMS are pretty cheap

Set of 5 can run north of $400 since most don't know how to shop for them. I just bought a set of 5 Ford ones for $198.95. I have also bought cheaper knock offs as I have the tools, but for the bronco I decided not to skimp. I will agree though if your selling a set of wheels with tires, removing them is dumb as they are prone to breaking.
