I wanna have comms as well, but I also need to communicate with active logging road channels if need be. So...CB or GMRS? It's in the 150Mhz to 170Mhz range for northern Ontario

That's an issue I'm not sure what to do about. I'm going GMRS, but spend time in BC a couple times a year on active logging roads.

I remember an episode of "The Overland Lady" out west, where she's able to tune into and listen to the active logging communications with her setup but was NOT able to transmit to them

That would be better than nothing. At least if I knew they were coming down I could pull over and wait.

Yup...they do have the right of way in both directions as far as I know. And they FLY! Can be very dangerous without a radio.
I think BC actually have a government produced video about public use on logging roads...?

I'm actually getting some Rugged Radio GMRS radios now... totally different direction.

I'd recommend not getting Rugged Radio anything. They just re-brand cheap Chinese radios and raise the price.

I didn't pay for them, won them in a giveaway...they have to be better than the Midland FRS/GMRS radios though, maybe?

I'm in a similar situation to the OP - little to no knowledge of the options. I figure once I actually have my Bronco and hopefully start linking up with local off road groups, I can get a higher quality setup that will work with whatever they're using.

In the meantime, something cheap that I can have a couple of on hand. That way at least if I'm out with the family we can use them when we're not all in the vehicle at the same time. And if I'm out with just one or two other vehicles, I've got a couple to share.

I received these cheap Retevis FRS radios for Christmas. A 4-pack, with removable batteries and earpieces for $90 - which I got as a gift - will hopefully serve my needs for at least a little while.

Motorola has always made good handhelds and radios. They'll be awesome for years.

Another radio band to consider is MURS.

A pro is that it does just a little better outdoors than GMRS or fRS radios. Also a pro or a con is that there are very few MURS being used so not much interference. Not a lot of anyone to call for help! Not a lot of radios avaliable either.

None!

I would get the midland mxt275 or mxt575 and remote mount the thing in a discrete location behind an interior model panel with a plug extension for the handset.

Not me but here's a video, I would have put that unit behind one of the rear side panels and ran plug extension up to the front. When I get my bronco I'll be doing this!
