From my understanding you have to be plugged in to the vehicle to use Android Auto.....it doesn't work over Bluetooth

Bluetooth works and it also works wired.

The Bronco Sport had to be wired, but I don't know if they fixed that.

Yeah @JerryC is correct.
  • Sync 3, which is the current version on Bronco Sport, requires it to be wired.
  • Sync 4, which is what the Bronco has, works wirelessly.
Your version of Android on your phone also matters as the initial release of Android Auto was wired only, but I'll admit I don't remember version details off the top of my head.

No need to do anything to the top usb port. You have wireless Android Auto and it auto-connects when you're not using the lower USB port.

That's just it my Android Auto won't connect through Bluetooth it tells me to plug in my phone.....is there a setting that I'm missing?

Sync tells you to plug in or your phone tells you to plug in?

Sync tells me to plug in the phone for Android Auto

It can connect to more than one phone for calls but only one at a time for AA.
You have to tell Sync which phone to use AA on in the Phone List by highlighting the AA icon.
Did you do this step? Is you phone and AA up to date?

Mine works over Bluetooth, it also automagically turns on WiFi on the phone, must need more bandwidth...
