I now have both the TOR tailgate reinforcement and adjustable tire carrier installed along with 37's that are mounted on 17 inch Method 305's with 0 offset. I have the adjustable part of the tire carrier pushed in all the way and when the spare is mounted the tire does not make contact with the tailgate reinforcement or either of the two rubber things that stick out at the bottom of the door. It comes very close to the reinforcement arm but no contact. For those that have this setup, am I OK leaving as is or should I get tennis balls or some other rubber type extension to put between the rubber thing on the door and the tire? The whole setup is very solid and I have done a day of wheeling with it like this and it does not make any sound or vibrations or anything. When I grab the tire from the rear I cannot shake it. It does move at all like the OEM set up did.

I ran like you did for about a year. Eventually I threw some Barnes tire bumpers in there - the spare tire did start to twist/sway side to side - I don't think it would hurt that carrier, but for $20 it's cheap insurance to keep it from twisting around as much .

Thanks I’ll grab a pair. Follow up question, how do you get the OEM bumpers off? Mine are loose. I tried tightening them when I did the carrier but the screw in the middle just spins. Doesn’t get tighter or looser.

@Jason N : I had the TOR tire carrier and the DV8 Guard. I was also running 37s. I bought some squash balls off Amazon and put them in the bumpers. Problem solved, and even looked pretty good.

Two ways

The clip is the same type as used in the fender liners - the little screw is supposed to back out easy and release pressure on the prongs. They almost always strip out - easier to just pry the screw part out like a regular fender clip… except you can’t do that in the spare tire bumper.

the easy way is to just stuff a trim puller behind the bumper and pry it off - the clip will probably pop out before it deforms the aluminum - may want to alternate prying with wiggling the bumper around. But it’s possible the aluminum on the tailgate could bend, I won’t lie. Most of the time the clip will stay in the tailgate and the bumper will come off around the clip

More safe option is to heat a Phillips up with a lighter and melt it into the clip head. Once it cools should be able to get it to stay on the head while holding the body of the clip steady by applying pressure with the bumper.

thanks again. Ugh I hate those screw clips. Was afraid it was one of those. Now that I know exactly I’ll figure it out.

Take the plastic panel off of the inside of the gate (on the hump) and you can get to the rear of that clip, try and hold it with some needle nose while backing out the screw.
Sometimes pushing out on the whole thing while turning the screw helps too.
There’s no one solution that is the best…kinda have to mess with it and find what seems to yield results.

I've replaced each screw clip thing I've removed with a traditional pop style one. When I replaced my coilovers, the rear shield was the first time I've experienced those. I thought I was doing something wrong when trying to remove. they're just crap IMO

Can you get to the passenger side one that way? I've had a table installed there for too long to remember if you can get at it or not.

Not that easily....but necessity is one heckuva motivator at times where mechanically-minded folks usually find a way.
I'm in the same kind of boat, as I have a table there and have not been inside the gate to mess with the bumpers in many months.
If it is the passenger one that is being difficult, that is considerably harder to deal with.
I have a sets of needle nose pliers ranging from 2" to about 3' long and more flat bar and prying tools than anyone has a right to own...so in some combo of desperation I'd find a way.
Another good thing is that it is not far from the plastic panel that runs longways across the top of the gate for another angle of attack.
