Hey y'all,

my wifes 2020 Explorer ST had all these symptoms and the 10R60 in her vehicle just imploded. full rebuild for a pretty penny at just over 100k miles. I'm pretty concerned about the longevity of the Broncos 10R60 considering. @Ducati1098 is there anything we can do to improve the longevity of these 10r60 transmissions? Are their any for sure early indicators that we need to be aware of?

10R60’s are pretty stout transmissions. Not something I would be overly concerned about.
Very rare for one to implode. They really don’t have any very common failures other than the occasional valve body issue here and there.

I’ve got a ‘23 Badsquatch with 4,500 miles that started having these same shifting issues being discussed here. Dealer performed the 24-2138 TSB, but it did not correct the problem, so they replaced the valve body. Was told I need to drive it for “a few drive cycles,” basically 400-500 miles until the transmission relearns itself. I’ve only driven about 200 miles since the service, but I’m still experiencing the transmission acting up with hard downshift, cold start reverse, and since I got it back, there’s now a delay shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. We’ll see what this relearning may do over the next 300 miles or so, but I’m not convinced it will all be corrected. I’ll report back.
Update: It’s been close to 700 miles and I’m still experiencing the harsh down shifts and initial harsh shift into reverse as well as some new issues like when dropping a gear at highway speed to pass it downshifts but then downshifts again to an even lower gear and completely retards the truck from accelerating because it’s basically at computer limited redline, which on the highway is incredibly dangerous. It’s happened to me twice. Looking to get it back into the dealer after the holiday. Anyone else experience something similar?

Help me understand why you say this.

something like 208 complaints for 18-21 Explorers w/ the 10r60 most detailing a major failure of the transmission specifically. Ford is being sued for the 18-21 explorers for a known transmission issue (drum and pressed bushing failure) that was never recalled but quietly fixed around 21.5/22 supposedly. Weird that broncos w/ the same 10r60 are having similar issues. The transmission shop that just repaired my vehicles says they seem them failing in the same location weekly.

Not sure where you’re getting that information, but the 10R60 was never affected by the CDF drum issue.
10R60 wasn’t even released until 2020 🤔

Also, even if they were.. 208 failures lol do you realize how many 10R60’s are on the road?
Not even close to a common issue.

I’ve rebuilt 2 10R60’s ever due to an internal failure. Out of every Ford transmission, it’s the one I’ve worked on the least.. by far.

209?

Give or take a few million.

Of course there's going to be a hundred or so bad transmissions a year when they are producing a new transmission roughly every 15 seconds at either one of these transmission plants.

Also, while these transmissions are very reliable, they aren't bullet proof, they are likely to fail if you shoot them with a rifle.

I'm certainly not purporting to know much other than what I’ve been told and read so far. 208 complaints registered out of an unknown number of failures. 208 people taking time to log complaints seems pretty significant. There is a question of what defines reliability or the lack of….not really sure.

Pretty sure you’re talking about the 10R80 transmission as that’s the one that has the CDF drum issues and all the other problems.
Different transmission than the Bronco.

LATEST UPDATE: Dealer replaced the transmission valve body for a second time within 800 miles of driving on the first replacement. I’m not convinced it’s fixed because they told me that the second valve body didn’t fix all the issues, so they were going to have the shop foreman evaluate it before replacing the entire transmission. Miraculously, the foreman is now saying that the valve body did in fact correct all the issues. I don’t have the truck back, yet but I guarantee it’s still not right. I’ll post an update once I get it back.

Can you add results after the repair?

After a cold soak, the transmission fluid can drain out of the torque converter.
When this happens, the first engagement when cold can be slightly delayed and can also feel like it's in neutral, until it has time to fill the converter again.
There is no repair for this, Ford considers this a normal characteristic of the transmission. Some seem worse than others which may be attributed to debris in the valve body or potentially other things.

Either way, I would just bring it to your dealer and have them try and duplicate it. There is a very common TSB for various 10 speed shifting concerns that they should perform that may help with the issue.

The SSM I listed earlier in this thread has been replaced and this is now the latest TSB:

Is this still the latest info? Going to the dealer for another install and want to bring up this issue
