Southern states aren't immune to cold weather. It happens. Problem is, these areas aren't capable of handling 1-2 weeks of single digit temperatures and highs that don't get above freezing. I understand why you might not want to build everything out to adhere to these standards, but to have no backup source for power is idiotic. Why on earth would you isolate yourself as a state (basically) from the support of the grid of the US?

The things I've read on twitter and other social media of people telling others its survival of the fittest are a-holes at best. In the richest country in the world, with the resources available, it's terrible that anyone would have to deal with this. It isn't survival of the fittest. Get over yourself people. Yes, people need to support themselves and their families the best they can and to their abilities, but to just think people should die because it's cold out is f'n heartless.

Sorry for the rant. A little triggered by stuff I've read this morning. Zero compassion/empathy/respect for fellow man in our world.

We've been have controlled black outs since Monday. Our grid is maxed with this cold weather. The power company is shutting down blocks for 30-60 minutes at a time.

Us too, Ive been lucky and have not had it happen yet. Knock on Wood, fingers crossed. It is still snowing.

I’m thinking what you are reading might be a very small sliver of people. Where I am at has been very much a community effort and everyone I know have been seeking out those in need.

For sure. I think it's mostly people outside the impacted areas posting this garbage. It's doesn't change the fact that it's heartless.

Yes, like everything else it becomes political and sides are taken without any context or appreciation for facts on what is taking place or has happened. I do a pretty good job of not becoming political and blindly taking a side. In the end, none of us should have blind faith in a politician or party affiliation. I was taught this a long time ago and it hasn't failed me yet. LOL

There should be some safe guards put in place to react to extreme conditions. What those may be, I do not know, but I hope the people who are in charge of fixing this situation for Texans recommend a safe guard so this doesn't widely impact the state again.

I'm from Illinois and a rural area. It wasn't out of the normal to lose power for a day or 2 growing up during extreme cold or ice storms, etc. It's part of the gig, but we were prepared for those conditions.

8" to 10" of snow so far is not a flurry.

Same in my area of North Carolina. With a limited ability to deal with that, an 8-10" snow shuts us down for several days. Luckily our power grid in quite reliable. The biggest problem we have with the power is downed power lines from falling tree limbs if it's a wet snow.

As some of you may know, North Texas is experiencing heavy snow (any snow is heavy, here).
My gf has a Jeep Wrangler, that I got to test in the snow... if I wasn’t 100% convinced on the Bronco, I am now.

It handled the snow pretty good, and even better after I put it in 4H.

I even gunned it, just to see how it would take the snow, and damn, I was pleasantly surprised. If the Bronco is supposed to be better than the Wrangler, than I have to say you are in for a treat, if you haven’t driven a Jeep before.

I can’t wait for my Bronco now!

Did you see that crazy pile up that happened in Texas was over 100 vehicles one into an other driving to fast and hit ice at least 5 confirmed dead I swear Texas don’t know what to do when the get a little snow or ice. One of our truck drivers was in Louisanna and they got hit with snow

You guys hang in there. We are supposed to get another 9" tomorrow, but we are built for it.
Wonder what the fellas with electric vehicles do in all of these power outages.

More specifically it's a texas windmill problem. Windmills in all other locations are built to handle the cold, but that equipment was left off of texas windmills to save money.

And the windmills are only a small part of the problem. Traditional fossil fuel plants are also shut down due to cold, for the same reason.

Nuclear has been shutting down too, fossil fuel and nuclear all need water to work and when it freezes... it doesn't work.

Not sure how/why, next town over had a blackout yesterday due to the cold. -20 is cold but not really particularly noteworthy, I don't know if they get fed off a spur out of Missouri/down south somewhere or what the problem was.

A lot of people in here in Texas are rethinking that whole deregulation idea from 20 years ago. Basically none of our power generation (both petroleum and renewable) were winterized because... no one told them to and they cut costs at the time of construction.

Similarly, there isn't a building code for water pipes to withstand anything below 32 degrees. A lot of our pipes are bare lines in our attics and they're freezing up. We're slowly warming up here in Houston and as the pipes thaw water is flowing out of the cracks.

I've been really lucky so far. We live across from a hospital so we never lost power and our hot water line froze up at 13 degrees but we managed to thaw it with a heat gun and we've been OK since. A lot of people aren't so lucky and they're only just finding out they have broken pipes. Or they're away with other family with power and will come home to flooded houses. It's bad and it could have been prevented.
