I needed a way to carry a small gas can and I liked the one made by hammer built, but I just have the stock wheels and tires so I didn’t need the tailgate reinforcing piece.

I found a maker on Etsy that did a custom 16 gauge steel shelf that is 17” long x 8” wide with a 1” lip. They spaced the holes 15” on center & big enough for M8 bolts, which lines up perfectly with the tailgate hinge bolts.

I found a small 5 L gas can that I mounted, but it seems sturdy enough to hold a 2 gal rotopax if you need more.

I removed the spare tire to take the weight off the hinges while I installed this bracket. I used 1.25” diameter rubber washers against the hinge the protect the paint (wanted plastic/nylon, but my local hardware didn’t have them), and M8 x 1.25 x40 mm long bolts with a small washer. I also used a piece of scrap lumber between the bumper and tailgate to make sure the tailgate didn’t get misaligned while I had both bolts out. I used a little dab of blue locktite and torqued each to about 30 ft lbs.

It fits pretty flush to my spare tire, so I’ll leave the bracket in place even when I’m not carrying gas. I have the Big Bend stock tires and wheels (non-squatch) so your mileage may vary.

Looks pretty good, but is it really worth the bother for just two gallons? I find it easier to just make sure that I top off before heading out into the wilderness areas.

I’m using it to take extra gas for my dirt bike when camping. I probably should have clarified that.

Looks good. That's exactly where'd I'd out it but 2 gallons seems small.

I bought the hammer built setup since I have 37’s but also eventually am only going to grab the 2 gallon tank. My only intention is to use it for grabbing gas for the lawn mower. I dislike putting the cans in the Bronco. Looks 👍 what can is that not sure I’ve seen a black one. In fact I thought they had to be red for gasoline. 🤷‍♂️

I actually thought they had to be red for fuel too, but I found this one and it has the same “gasoline” wording on it as the red one and I like how it blends in a little better (aesthetically).

@'21OBX You really got my thinking with your question, and while I can't find a specific law that says a non-commercial use has to be red, I am exchanging my can for the red one in the name of safety. Nothing wrong with having the people behind me know there's flammable liquid on my tailgate!
