Honestly, that sounds a lot like early stage dementia. We will see a lot more of it as life spans increase. Need to have empathy. Because it could be you one day wondering around sitting in the cars you remember from your youth, but have no idea where the car you arrived in is parked.

Hopefully the Depends worked and he didn't leave anything on your seat.
I suppose that's possible....

Could be... or it could be the guy is just a prick... I have met a few of those in my life as well.

however, I think you're right. It just didn't seem like he was confused. He just seemed like a grumpy old man like some people on.... ummm... uh..... Never mind.

My 83 year old dad, who looks 70 due to a life time of daily swimming, is at that stage. But you would not realize it right off. We try to keep an eye on him, but sometimes he gets away from us. Never know what others are going through. Sucks when the mind starts to fail before/faster than the body. But then, I am sure having a broken body and a strong mind sucks too, but you can communicate. Just saying.

He does not pass out ducks, although he used to carve decoys. Had to take the carving knives away, though.

Oh, I understand. My girlfriend's dad is going through that at 78 (early onset). Physically fine but keeps repeating the same stories and is easily confused, so I'm sympathetic. I wasn't really hard on the guy and wasn't confrontational. Just kept asking if I could help him.

The family knows his eight stories to share by heart. Five are situationally triggered, three are random to fill space. Like his 1955 VW Bug with a busted reverse gear requiring him to park strategically while in med school, then the dean blocked him in, the parking break failed, and he thought he was going to get kicked out. Again, no duck stories.

Yep! Same thing with us. Same stories over and over and we can lip sync the stories verbatim.

Something I learned a long time ago that has helped me to better understand the world is this: If you have a thought, any thought, always keep the space open in your mind that the exact opposite of your thought may actually be what is true.

It's nothing more than the simple concept of flexible thinking. Once you're able to do that, then you're able to see life through an entirely new lens and you realize that most of the time there is room to learn something new from just about anyone you meet each day.

I actually saw a quick video on IG the other day of KRS-1 talking to a kid about how important it is for young people to be respectful of older people and to learn what they have to say because they have experience. Equally important is for old people to actively listen to younger people because they're coming from an entirely different place and bringing new perspective and information. I think that generally the problem with humanity is the fact that for some reason we all tend to become fixed in our thoughts and opinions of things, and we tend to ignore the fact that things change, new information exists and that others might simply have a different perspective. Nobody has life completely figured out. It's not even possible anyway. We don't know the answers or the ending of our day, week, month, year or even life so why do we constantly think we're right and then have emotions about the stories we make up to support our idea of being right. Life is nothing more than the Chinese Farmer Story.

You and @GToddC5 might be the only two things I've ever seen in NJ that I liked.
Great post.

Come for the Cheesesteaks (They are better in NJ than Philly - fight me), stay for the Pork Roll 😁
I'd love to have a cheesesteak and a bourbon one day with my Cheeto compatriot.
