Surprisingly good MPG (7MT)

I don’t think I have a 16.9 gal tank. Some of my estimated rage calculations put me at over 450 miles. I have pumped almost 20 gallons in my badlands on several occasions.

There is no way you fit 20 gallons into a 16.9 gallon tank. You must have a 4-door.

I think when quoting mpg it’s important to list

2dr/4dr
Engine
Transmission
Tire size
Tire Type

Something like:

4-Door, 2.7L, Auto, 35s, Territories

A base 2.3L 2 door on 16s will be night and day different than 2.7L Sasquatch 4-Door.

I think theres something to him leaving it in 5th and not being in boost.

He could have had a tail wind each way, but think usually wind in CA flows N to S if any in that part.

This. I too am a 2.3L with manual trans, 2 door though. Here's a log of my last 10 fill ups from my Fuelly.com. Anything that has a note next to it is me towing a small 1500 lb camper for at least 1/2 of the tank. I've learned that I can get much better MPG by staying out of 6th unless I'm not towing and it's level. As soon as you get over 2-3 psi boost, your MPG takes a pretty serious hit. I travel the posted speed limit so generally 70 mph on the interstates and I'm currently in the eastern states.

I also logged the difference between the computer and hand calculated MPG and the computer definitely reads high. You can correct this through the "Engineering Test Mode" screen on your Bronco. My calculation adjustment was .960, later tweaked to .963 so now my computer is pretty darn close to hand calculated.

I'll bet you can get good MPG with the 2.3 and manual transmission. It depends how you drive, temperature, hills, AC on or off, etc. I get pretty good with my 2.7 Sas and average 21. Driving around town and back roads- and it' brand new, only 600 miles on it. I expected 16-17. But I do drive with a light foot, AC off, windows down, flat roads and warm temperatures- 75-90 degrees. And it's a base 2 door, lighter weight than a 4 door.

If you believe the trip computer, maybe. I've never found a single vehicle (including motorcycles) that returns anything near accurate fuel economy numbers.

All I can say is I get nowhere that in "real world" (i.e. calculated) mileage.

I'm averaging just under 16mpg since I bought my Bronco lol

I've had my 4 door Big Bend with the Manual for 6 months, stock Durawhatever tires. I have never gotten below 22 MPG. Last week I drove over 1,400 miles through 4-corners, up to Silverton and Ouray CO. I did some serious 4WDing at 8,000-12,800 ft elevation. 50% of the time in Sport, the rest Normal. Highway speeds between towns were about 70MPH average. I got 24.2 MPG for the trip. Quite a bit of the trip before coming home bucking a 40 Kt headwind, I was averaging over 26 MPG. To the people that "can't" get good mileage from the 2.3 with a manual - my advice is to not do jackrabbit starts away from every light. I drive strongly, not like a granny. I just don't make every light and stop sign a manhood test, like so many young drivers I see driving 300+ HP vehicles. Drive like an adult....get adult mileage.

Base 2 door 2.3 MT stock tires

I’ve put about 400 miles on it so far. It’s showing 22.4 MPG (If you believe the computer). Reset trip 2 at first fill up and and averaging 24.1. I am babying it.

I just completed a 4500 mile trip from Milwaukee area to Moab with a head wind. From there we stayed on hiway 191 up through Flaming Gorge, Grand Tetons, two days in Yellowstone then across through Sheridan, Wy, Mt Rushmore and the Badlands. This is in a 21 Badlands four door with the 2.7 in normal mode. I forgot that there is an Eco mode. During the trip the worst average I was showing got down to 18.7 and the highest was 21.3. All in all I was quite pleased considering the hours spent driving 75 and 80+ mph across Nebraska and South Dakota. Of course the wind shifted back from the East on my return trip. That wrench icon is there because my four wheel drive is whack. Taking it to the dealer next week.. View attachment 336120

Did you adjust your spedometer/odometer settings after you changed tire size? From 30's to 33s will make it read low by 10%

I did not, but at 17-18 mpg, that's still less than 2 mpg difference. I'm not complaining at all, I just don't see how these folks are getting mid 20's?

I didn’t know there was a mpg gauge on my big bend, I work off the E and F gauge. I’ll have to find it tomorrow
