Adjusted for inflation and features, new cars are generally significantly cheaper than past decades.

The problem I have is feature creep. I would actually pay MORE to do LESS but BETTER. I want my car do one thing, get be from point A to point B. Do this safely, cheaply, and with right amount of smiles, and Slate will be successful.

I agree. The only tech I really want is a nice head unit, and the beauty of the Slate not even coming with one is you can add your own and keep upgrading anytime you like.

It’s like you didn’t even read what problem they were trying to solve.

“No range” you claim….or, had you read, it has 3x the average person’s daily mileage, providing ample range for around town activities given most folks will charge nightly. If you think you’re realistically and comfortably pouring yourself into that to drive from wherever you are to Key West, yeah it’s not designed for that.

Small? The website has a size comparison - it’s slightly shorter than a maverick (which is 4 dr) and a hair bigger than an ‘85 SR5 and longer than a 2dr jeep with the driver sitting further forward. Bigger in every dimension than a Kia soul. So size-wise, it seems to hit a home run on filling a gap left by every other manufacturer, as the maverick is the size of the old Ranger, the new Ranger is the size of an old F150, and a new F150 is enormous.

some people want a small, utilitarian maintenance free vehicle for convenience. Perfect size for taking trash out, picking up a new recliner or some stuff from the garden section or Home Depot. Fits in any parking spot and parking garage. Do I need to remember to change the oil or transmission fluids? No - I want something I don’t have to think about. It simply needs to be out of the way, and always work. Do I need it to look fancy or have fancy features? No that’s what the fun, larger and way more expensive vehicles are for.

the one thing it has going for it is price. It’s cheap. Around top tier golf cart territory. As it should be.

I’m sure it will have customers. Heck the Microsoft Zune has customers.

20k seems cheap enough. But then again it’s a lot of money for a toy with no real competitive features and lack of the basics with infotainment etc.

It’s definitely cool to cruise the farm in for those with disposeablE income. And maybe some folks who can’t quite afford a vehicle, to get them out of the subway. That’s a definite plus. But beyond that it’s hard to fathom.

I think it's awesome, and there is absolutely a market for this, the Maverick proved it, but Ford couldn't keep the price down on them. If Slate can really keep the price down they will sell...

IF!

Starting MSRP for the basest Maverick was $19K in the beginning. My daughter was looking for an off to college kids' car. 100K mile used cars were $9K, so it would make sense. Mavericks didn't stay that price for long. The slate would be a fun way to dip one's toe in the EV scene if the price sticks.
