Thoughts on buying a kit from auto parts store. Never repaired tires myself. But very mechanically inclined. Looking more for opinions on these kits being safe good materials. I now have 2 screws. One on each vehicle. Figure I would save time and 50-70 bucks.

I've got one from O'Reilly's that I've used several times. I think what you want to make sure of is that the rubber and glue is new and not old/dried out. There is a kit from Boulder Tools that a lot of folks like, but you might need to order that one.

I was looking at the Orielly kit. I’ll give it a go.

I've used it twice with the stock GY's and didn't have any issues. I actually need to replace it, so this is a nice reminder to do so.

I've got a cheap one from Tractor Supply I think, but haven't had to use it.

Any time I've gotten a bolt, I go ahead and swap with the spare and have my tire shop repair it. They do it for free, which is nice, but I guess that's why I pay a little bit more for tires when I buy them there.

But if I ever had two tires at the same time, I'd be ready!

They now have vulcanized rubber plugs so they're pre-ready....just need the T tool to expand the hole and insert...

I have used them and they work great. Had tire shops say I needed a new tire just to get the business. I put plugs in and re-inflate, never once had a problem. Saved hundreds of dollars. Just can't use them in the sidewall.

Worked. But what a sob to get plug into tire. Bent the t handle insertion tool. Teamed out the hole as instructed.

You are fighting with the air pressure. I deflated the tire - it was much easier and I have a twin ARB compressor underhood

I deflated it. Second tire isn’t leaking so not plugging it. Culprits.

I have used my Harbor Freight kit once on these OEM GY SAS tires. I patched it and it held, but on the highway at 80 with my kids in the back seat I started thinking about that nasty looking screw I pulled and the damage it did so I ended up at Discount Tire a few days later asking them to check my work.

They ended up taking the tire off the rim and using an inner patch on top of mine. Not sure it was necessary or even better, but I blissfully drive 80 on the highway now :p

I too have always been a fan of patches. Last few times the repair shops didn’t. Just plugged it. Perhaps screw size dictates effort used these days. I mean if the can get the same $40 just doing a plug. Today’s work ethic.

Be somewhat careful with "strip" plugs, they really aren't considered a permanent repair. I've had some last for just a few days, and some 5 years. But, these are very cost effective.

"Mushroom" plugs are considered a more permanent repair, more cost up front but less long term hassle in my experience.

Either way, both are extremely easy to use, especially on the trail.

I carry a strip plug kit in all my vehicles, bronco isnt much of an issue as it has a full size spare, but running donuts reduces your hwy speed if your far from getting it fixed properly.
