Apologies if this has been discussed on a previous thread. Just seeking clarification on the OEM Rock Rails vs Rocker Panels.

From the description, pictures and my understanding it seems the Rocker Panels are similar to the mic plastic trim a supply mostly a cosmetic fix and protection from light rocks/brush etc.

Whereas the Rock Rails will provide a higher level of protection and be able to support the Bronco and its weight in more extreme off road situations.

Would that be more or less the gist?

I'm not familiar with the rocker panels you speak of? The OEM rock rails are designed to support the weight of the Bronco and will provide some protection from debris however the rocker panels are still exposed.

My understanding of the terms: the “rocker panel” is simply the part of the body that extends between the wheel wells, underneath the doors. On the Bronco, it’s painted metal, color matched to the body color (it’s part of the body, like a fender). The optional OEM rock rails sit beneath the rocker panel, and are bolted to the frame. They offer a decent degree of off-road protection against damage to the rocker panel, but less than a full-blown (aftermarket) rock slider. My Badlands has both rocker panels (all Broncos do) and OEM rock rails.

I assume they mean something like this, which does look a little like a rock rail if you squint:

As opposed to the rock rails, which are of course a distance away from the rocker panel and designed to take weight and hits without deforming into the rocker panel very easily:

So to answer their question, rocker panel guards help with things like rock chips on the paint, and anything coming into contact with the rocker panel otherwise you'd probably want trail armor.

@userdude for the win. Good research & pics.

Here’s what I did:
1. Thoroughly clean, prep, tape & primer the metal rocker panel & pinch weld below the doors.
2. After primer step, paint flat black.
3. After flat black has dried, paint with your choice of bedliner or underbody coating, including the hidden backside/underside.
4. Install a pair of “take off” Ford Rock Rails from eBay.
5. Install your choice of bolt-on steps to fit the Ford Rock Rails. I installed the IAG steps. https://iagoffroad.com/iag-v2-ez-step-add-on-for-2021-2023-ford-bronco.
6. Enjoy!

To the OP:
I believe your understanding is correct, but your terms are a bit off.

Here is my understanding:
Rocker Panel - This is the part of the vehicle body between the wheel at the bottom of the vehicle.
Rock Rails - are very strong rails that usually support the weight of the vehicle and are desgined to deflect damage from the vehicle body/rocker panel area.

Additional Items:
Pinch Seam - The seam under the rocker that is painted body color usually.

If you are looking for rock rails there are usually two types.
Frame mounted
Body mounted

Frame mounted extend back to the frame and attach there. These are generally regarded as the most robust solution and sold by various after market vendors. Some vendors have rock rails that are also steps. I purchased RCI for my needs here.

Body mounted are generally less robust, however on the bronco ford made some re-enforced body mount points that are supposedly very robust, but likely still less to than the frame mounts.

Not to be contentious here, but the rocker panels are an integral body structural element and side instrusion safety component usually made foe, AHSS. Definatly dont want to crush or damage in any way because AHSS loses 50% of strength once reformed.

I do have the accessory rocker guards and recently saw bushwacker jasnone with integral sill protection as well....would have gotten that.

For any serious off road must have the best rock sliders can get as well as bottom armor, and the full suite of body and light armor. For this cost can get a perfect 7 year old lightly used fully armored KTM off road dirt bike that will sustaon zero damage in pretty much any scenario and cover same ground at 10-20 tims the speed of a Bronco.
