Definitely would be less space to get your foot in there but I don't need the steps at all. The wifey is the one that uses them otherwise I'd remove them altogether.
I don't use the step either. Had Rock Rails and the aftermarket IAG Rail Steps on my Black Diamond. Never used the step other than to brush off sand on my feet from the beach. On my OBX, I raised the OEM step and like the overall appearance hiding the pinch weld. But the best part is the step serves as a gravel catcher from the myriad of debris getting slung up on the side.

Finally got around to doing this. Just a quick tip, I found it much easier to get the bolts started if you take them to the bench grinder and put a bevel on the tip.

Finally got to doing this today! I ended up cutting the pieces to 3.25"x3" which had them sitting flush. The bolts from Amazon worked great as well. Most of the clip nuts were loose so be mindful of that when lowering they could rotate and fall inside.
@Y2KFirehawk - so from your perspective, you feel that 3.5 x 3.5 are too big ? I noticed your cut down comment

Great mod! Called my buddy that owns a machine shop to see if I could use some of his equipment to cut up the cutting board. He ended up machining spacers for me out of aluminum. The truck looks so much better with the running boards raised the extra inch.

Share some pics of the spacers, if you can.

Agree on the overall look. One would think an inch wouldn't make that much difference, but it does.

Did this mod today. Much better looking.

I used some hdpe plastic. Cut with a 60 tooth finish blade. Used some stainless M6-1.0x45 bolts.
