I would take it to the dealer and claim it under comprehensive insurance coverage as vandalism and get a new one. all the heat and chemicals will likely ruin it. Your "buddy" is an idiot.
If the guy who did it is willing to pay for a replacement, why bother committing insurance fraud?

Technically it was vandalism.

Have you tried WD-40? It removes adhesives extremely well and should not hurt the plastic.

The anger & frustration is real…

Lots of good advice here but the best advice is heat, lots of patience & the 3M adhesive remover that is safe on vinyl. Alcohol will likely be effective but, I have no first hand experience on vinyl.

Once it’s off, you can address the scratches with Plexus Plastic Cleaner - it’s amazing and the ONLY product you should use on the plastic windows for cleaning!

Good luck!

Plexus or 303. Made for cleaning plastic and vinyl.

These soft top windows hold on to tape adhesive very well. My dealer used scotch tape to hold the temporary plate to the inside of the rear window with 2 small strips, and the residue is still there. Haven't got around the cleaning it off yet...

No fraud intended. My thinking is that this person really did vandalize the car. but true he can just go buy a new rear panel if he will actually do that.

I wouldn’t get pissed, just ”Sorry man, I just ordered a new window. Here’s the bill thanks.”. Of course, $5 says he will be the one pissed. But, you don’t destroy someone properly. If he doesn't like it. I would just ask him where he wants the $1000 worth of damage on his vehicle? A little shaving cream in the hot sun should do it next summer. You could write a funny statement with it. ;)

Destroy might be a bit of a strong word in this case... It was a bad joke that the OP's friend likely assumed was temporary (and would have been if Ford hadn't cheaped out on those garbage plastic windows) but the window panel isn't destroyed.

Your buddy is a dumbass. You have to be very careful with soft top windows.
Buddy needs to step up and make this right. Order the new panel and hand him the bill.
It will be a learning experience for him.

OP would have to read his policy binder to read the definition of "vandalism" per his coverage, but vandalism is vandalism whether or not you know the party that damaged your vehicle. what makes you think it's insurance fraud?

The windows are top quality. But even a moron knows stickers on soft windows are permanent.
