previous fords I have had has a tag on the keys when you purchased.. If not, take VIN and ID to dealer, they can get the code that way.

Well, this is getting interesting, for those of you who are following along.

Contacted the dealership this morning, thought I could swing by and get the keys cut. Here's what transpired:

- Dealership where I bought the vehicle: "We're sorry, our key cutting machine hasn't worked in a long time, you have to call another dealership."
- Next closest dealership, not affiliated with the selling dealership: "We're sorry, the selling dealership has to be the one to cut the key, b/c only they can charge Ford for the service. This is not a warranty item."
- Next closest affiliated dealership (about 45m away): "We're sorry, we can't help you, it has to be the original dealer, even though we're in the same group."
- Call to Ford Customer Service: "I'm sorry, we share the same phone number with the Ford Customer Relationship team and I'm with Marketing. Let me get someone to help you."
- Next rep up: "I'm sorry, we can't assist you with that, as it is a dealer issue. We submitted a complaint for you to the dealership team. They will reach out to you if they need more info. Here's a case number."

So... seriously, is this crazy? I asked the 2nd dealer service guy if keys are cut by the dealership, then does that mean all vehicles delivered by that dealer are getting blanks? He said no, they should be cut at the factory... Umm, then how is this not a warranty item?

Apparently, the dealer complaint also goes back to the head of the dealership. We'll see if I get a follow-up call today.

Since this has become a bit of a journey, I'll post updates as we go along.

Ok, you are not going to believe this next part.

I was in the area of the original dealer, so I dropped in, figuring I'd start with the service manager and then talk to the general manager, if necessary.

When I walked in, the Service Assistant greeted me and I explained that I have a blank key. He quickly said "ok, we can cut that for you." ... ... ... - me >> crickets.

I then explained about my conversation this morning when I called in and he was confused, starting calling to the back, talking to techs, etc. Everyone confirmed the key cutting machine is working! (WTF??)

So, I am scheduled to stop by tomorrow morning at 7am (I didn't have both fobs with me). Apparently, it's a 2-hour process, Ford makes a big deal out of it, verifying id, vehicle details, etc, before the cut is allowed.

More to come and I am still flabbergasted that the guy this morning was so quick and specific about not cutting keys.

Final update, with a positive ending!

Landed at the dealership this morning at 7am, handed over the vehicle, fobs, registration, and drivers license (apparently all needed to complete their forms).

Took just over an hour, vehicle returned with cut keys that work!

Service guy made the point several times that I should've gone through the sales department, as this was not a warranty item (which still boggles my mind). He also thinks the GM will want to know about the keys being blank upon delivery, so they can check the others. He (the service guy) personally had never seen or heard of this happening before.

Thanks to everyone here for your input and hopefully this thread will help the next person who encounters this odd situation of blank keys inside the fob upon delivery!

The need for multiple forms of identification (registration and ID) is fair, otherwise anyone can grab the VIN off your windshield and get a key made.

We needed to get a spare fob for a Tahoe here at work and needed to bring all of that stuff for them to even order the fob.

Glad you got it done ,Sorry you had to deal with people that don`t know how to do their job. No need to involve the sales dept. Also no need for the fobs or vehicle to cut keys. Yes for ID and regi and keys.

FYI for everyone else--- Bring your ID and current insurance or regi (make sure ALL names and addresses match) --it ain`t happening any other way due to a dealer in TX that had an employee there handing out key codes, like candy to kids at Halloween ,to cartel types who were putting drugs into peoples vehicles that regularly drove back and forth across the US/MX border. Those that got caught had no idea how the drugs got in their vehicles. Others just had the drugs taken out when they parked at their homes at night. It went on for a long time and a couple hundred vehicles IIRC.
