Does anyone know how to split the mirrors from the mirror arms? I am looking to have them sanded smooth and painted gloss black. Thanks in advance

Why won't it hold, every reputable painter/ body ship has given me quotes and said any plastic is paintable including fender flares etc. They all have said proper prep, sanding smooth, cleaning surface and primer with adhesion promoter. No one has ever told me paint won't adhere to plastic trim

If you're talking about the mirror caps, check this out. You could also buy gloss black mirror caps from Ford for like $200-250 for the set instead of painting them.

If you're not referring to the caps, which part are you talking about?

Where it actually rotates, I haven't taken anything apart. Same process I guess there's a metal cap and spring? Someone on the forum over extended there mirror but don't believe they actually seperated the mirror base or frame from the arm.

Keep in mind, OEM mirrors are not intended for repair, only replacement. Mirror shells can usually be disassembled but depending upon the interior retention design the clips may have to be broken to accomplish it. In the case where the OEM offers a color matched shell for different trim levels this may not be the case i.e. it won't be easy to disassemble the shell but it can probably be done if you are careful. If you want to remove the mirror head at the pivot, usually there is a retention nut that can be accessed from the bottom (usually under a small trim piece). If you decide to do this you might be digging a hole for yourself (I'm not familiar with this particular design so I'm just not sure. 6 years as an OEM mirror designer here). It's possible that if you remove the lower fastener it may release an upper connection internally, making it impossible to reattach without completely removing the shell. Another possibility (although also not without risk) might be to remove the glass and try to get to the fasteners from that direction. The glass is always designed to be replaced for service. The risk is that it is NOT designed for removal unless it is already broken i.e. it won't matter if you damage it further because you intend to replace it anyway. Just be careful whatever you decide to do.

Suma's installation videos might give you some insight as to what access exists behind the glass

Actually it doesn't look like there's access behind the glass.
