Went and look at a 2022 Outer Banks today. Only 16k miles. Engine looked really rusty what could cause this? Clean carfax but this sure looks like some sort of water damage. What do you think? This was the worst example but there were similar spots all over the engine.

Where is is from?

Looks like surface rust from living in the salt belt.

The aluminum front engine cover also looks heavily oxidized. This just looks like it has seen two seasons of hard salted winters.
So would you stay away from it?

Personally I would _never buy a car north from north of the rust belt, especially when there are plenty that aren’t to be had.

Will that one work fine? Probably. But I lived ten years in the Midwest and worked on rusty cars. Salted cars are not for me.

All that aside, your profile says you’re in KY and depending where, they salt there too. If you’re gonna salt it anyway, maybe it doesn’t matter.

Canada window sticker so that makes sense. Would you stay away from it?
I never buy cars from the rust belt, but that is just me.

It is only a few years old probably isn't too rusty.

Water, raw metal, + air = rust

Some of the 2024 Broncos being delivered in the last couple months are almost as rusty because they were driven in the salt right off of the assembly line. Living way South of any salted roads, I’m not happy with the salt crystals that were all under mine and the resulting rust mine already has from being driven in Michigan. I’ll just live with it though.

The engines in my boat have less rust than that.
My boat engine never gets wet so that makes sense. The lower unit gets wet but it is made to regularly get wet. I assume that Bronco, like many Broncos, wasn’t treated very well by the previous owner.

Does a Canadian Bronco in the USA have any warranty? Most brands do not but wasn’t sure about Ford.

Probably just been in more salt than we’re used to down here.
