Yeah, I’m guessing my 2D will average approx 8mpg. Teapot Canyon isn’t all that difficult but it’s slow going.

Tailgate support is a legit consideration. I’m running the Turn Offroad tailgate reinforcement & tire carrier. It was a bitch to install but it’s stout.

I carry a plastic 5gal Harbor Freight gas can that I carefully fill. It does not smell at all in the cabin. I store it in the rear passenger foot well and it remains reasonably secure in that area. At most I carry one front passenger. It works surprisingly well.

I’d also consider a metal Jerry can in the same position.

I was also considering fabbing a metal plate to secure to a half rack, on which I’d attach a rotopax mount so it would lie flat. But the Harbor Freight cheapskate option works so well I didn’t bother. Also improves gas mileage & wind noise to not use the half rack.

Thanks for this validation. The rotopax setup is over $400 which just seems crazy for two plastic jugs and a strap system. I keep coming back to just throwing a plastic gas jug into the back for $30 plus gas cost.

Update: I caved and ordered an EZ Spare Tire Mount and 2 X 3 gallon rotopax. I chose these amounts knowing a) previous gas usage from other trails, b) using the rule of thirds (1/3 in, 1/3 out, 1/3 extra), and c) knowing I can turn around if I use more than expected.

If anyone has made (or not made) the journey to the Dolls House from Hans Flat with an equivalent setup in a Bronco Badlands SAS 4d (or other) I'd be curious to know how many gallons the rangers say you need (online it only says 'extra gas'), and how many you needed. Thanks!

I lead a group of Landcruisers and a 4Runner into The Maze with my 02 Ranger about 4 years ago. We started at Green River with full tanks and I had 12 gallons extra. We entered at Hans Flat, went down Flint Trail to Dollhouse spent a couple nights. We then went to The Maze Overlook for another couple nights. We were going to go to the East side of Horseshoe Canyon to camp and hike, but the when we got to Hans Flat the 4 Runner was too low on fuel. He underestimated how much fuel 4 low uses. He only brought 5 gallons extra. Everybody else was fine but would use most of our fuel if went to Horseshoe Canyon and back out to fill up. I decided we could just run to Hanksville to fill up then go to Horseshoe canyon on the West side to camp and hike.

@bgr33r - good call on the spare tire mount. That’s a good start.

It’s hard to say how much fuel will be needed for your trip. You’ve read my story on aux fuel woes. Last time, with a longer route including panorama point I had 12 extra gallons combined with a smaller 16g oem tank. Plus my Bronco is thirsty on 37’s. This time around I’m planing on bringing at least 15g.

Let us know how your trip goes!

Thanks @Ramble_Offroad and @gbub. All packed up and locked and loaded, heading out soon. And Might find a 5 gal in Hanksville to supplement, too, depending on how she’s running. TBD.

just arrived back and that drive sure was rowdy!

I have detailed notes on mpg that are boring. But the highlights are I ran 14 mpg in, and 13 mpg out. Also, from Tea Pot to chimney the crawl was <6mpg…

Anyways, what an adventure. I hope you have a blast in there next fall @Ramble_Offroad. I’m jealous of your 37s…

@bgr33r Ah! I found Chimney Rock on the map, for whatever reason I was thinking you were going to be further north. Tea Pot Canyon is pretty cool huh? I hope you had fun!

I opt’d to camp up there for direct access into the Maze, and some more quiet (I know Dollshouse is busy from rafters/the river and has 3 camps). I ran into some nice backpackers, but otherwise was very quiet. Here’s camp:

Did you go as far as the Harvest rock art in the Maze?
