I am curious if Ford ever offers promotional rates or discount codes for connected navigation. $80 seems a lot to pay just for navigation whenever everyone’s got a smart phone with Waze.

It seems like they would get a lot more buyers if the price was a lot less

to me $4 a month is the right Balance of price versus value, but what do I know?

I received a $20 promo for mine thru Dec 4. Got an email about it 10 days ago. When I log into my account, it shows Promo Available so guessing it's VIN tied since no codes needed.

I was just out west going from Yuma to the Grand Canyon. There was a lot of places you didn't get cell service. Even driving around in the GC state park reception was crappy. Yes I know I can download the area before I go there. But I am retired so I don't plan anything more than a day or two ahead when I am on the road. If I must see the biggest ball of string then away I go off the path I was on. Also I live in eastern TN there a lot of spots around here with out cell service. With all that said I have an older Garmin that I take with me. It has life time maps and traffic. I also have two more years left on my connected nav subscription. I am not sure I will continue it, because the Garmin seems to route me better.

Just looked at my account, no promo available on mine. My Nav just expired too last Oct so was looking to renew it as well but hard to do that when we mostly use Google Maps.

I’m luckily still covered for another year or so, but will say this, since I do venture outside of cell range often, connected nav is pretty good because it always works.

Maybe Nav still works with features missing without the connected payment, but I was once deep in the woods, thought I’d downloaded offline map on my cell, but it wouldn’t come up. Only way out was with the Nav in the Bronco and it got me to where I needed to be.

Not sure if this peace of mind is worth $80 per year or whatever, but it is something to think about if you venture out yonder.

isn't "connected nav" just another phrase for "we connect to map servers via the cell phone network"--just like your phone does? Or doesn't?

Not sure. Could be an LTE connection, or could be some sort of satellite connection like OnStar unless that was some other type of tech.

Also think the built in Nav is downloaded to be vehicle which may be why it worked while out of coverage. Guess I don’t think much about the tech behind this stuff, although I guess we all should, so I have some homework to know whether or not paying once the 3 years is up would be worth anything to me.

In times when CarPlay won’t connect, when I pug in the phone, it somehow does start working. However, in the before mentioned situation, nothing would pull up the cell map. I still have GAIA always and could map out my route, but the built in Nav Just came up and showed the route out to home.

It's cellular.

...

Which goes back to, just use your phone.
I can say that the connected built-in nav still works when there is no cellular reception. I don't really care what the voodoo is going on behind the scenes. It works when I expect it.

@MadMan4BamaNATL the nav. will still work even if you don't pay for the service after the 36 months. It was one of the distinguishing characteristics between it and the trial service. The trial service "dumbs down" the interface after the service has expired. Whereas the BIN doesn't after service has expired. You won't get map updates or weather radar and the like, but if you type in an address, the nav. will still work.

I had purchased the BIN on both of my Broncos for that reason. Thought it was wrong to be paying so much for the Bronco only to have the interface "dumbed down" after a trial expired. If and when I sell/trade, it is a nice feature that the next owner expects. I did get a bump in my offer when I sold my BD to the Honda dealership.

Ok, so it’s the connection using the App for the listed convenience features. Well, I do like them and use often, so I think the connection does need to be on in the truck for the stuff to work, so maybe I’ll think About paying for it, but $80 is a lot to me if that’s annual.

The nickel and diming gets old, but I get that someone has to code this stuff and keep it updated that make it look easy, but it’s complex. $50 would be an easier pill to get down.

Unless you have an EV, your phone does all of this. And even with an EV, you can get phone apps to do this. They just won't have direct access to your SOC, that's all.

All over the same cellular network.

As it does on your cell phone.

...without the live traffic and weather--each of which is already on your phone anyway, without additional cost.

Using a nav app on my phone out of cell service doesn't work. You seem to be missing the point. I don't have to download maps on the connected built in nav. It works whether I'm in cell service or not. I don't care if Ford is downloading the maps behind the scenes. It works as I expect without any effort on my part.
