I don’t have adaptive cruise so I don’t have the radar. The owners manual does say it is used if it is equipped.

I could be mistaken, but your ABS was already doing its job (from your manual braking) and it is what stopped you...in this case the Collision Assist was just a superfluous warning.

Brakes felt locked and didn’t feel the pulsing of the ABS. I’m sure it was collision assist which stopped me and pulled my vehicle to the left just missing is bumper.

Your probably right, though in the two cases I am certain I got the warning it did not activate the brakes - which is good because I understood the situation and was on top of it, and any auto-braking would have been another thing I had to deal with and would have made the situation worse, not better.

However in the OP's situation he stated:

"...Came up behind a guy at the stop light ,braked ( glare ice under the snow )and started to slide into is rear end. Within 3ft of his vehicle Collision assist kicked in..."

So he was already braking, though he admits it was on "glare ice". So perhaps he was not managing through his manual braking (ice can be difficult of course) and as he got close, the Collision Assist kicked in, braked harder forcing the ABS to work and managed to stop just short?? All speculation of course, I suspect the OP is not even sure exactly what happened.

Super low traction situations such as smooth ice are very difficult, and ABS can only do so much to find what little friction is available. ABS can actually be counter productive in snow, as if there is enough of it locking up (as opposed to rapid pumping - aka ABS) builds up a mound of snow in front of your tires which causes overall friction to go up and braking distances to get shorter...but I doubt Collision Assist has the sensors/smarts to leverage this fact.

This is the advantages of new tech. Just wish it didn’t cost so much, but a saved accident is awesome to hear. Perhaps saved you or them and saved you both a ton of stress and time.

The combo of tech and brut in my Bronco is honestly amazing sometimes due to the mix of it all.

Go pull a single wheel speed sensor and look at all the things that fail because one $30 part breaks. It’s amazing too.

I own a Range Rover and have had a gaggle of BMWs; trust I‘ve lived that life for some time, but the failures are rare for the first 5 years. After that, watch out!

Until then, the benefits have some merits. It’s the way of things.

In my experience the Ford ABS computers are far faster than humans reaction time and the computer can calculate the maximum rate of deceleration based on the traction available which humans cannot do quickly. It wouldn't surprise me a Ford actually tested this against the human reaction time, anticipated breaking pressure required, and maximum deceleration available, and decided that the computer was safer and far more capable than the human mind.

This is especially important in an emergency situation...where bad things can happen in less than 1 second.

Haven't had any events in my Bronco but it helped in the Silverado and Flex

Approaching a backed-up offramp, checking my mirror to see if the semi is coming in too hot when traffic ahead of me braked sharply, for example.

I wish the Bronco's alert was more noticeable. In the Flex it's appropriately loud and flashes a wide red light on the windshield. Bronco is a quiet tone and relatively subtle flash on the instrument cluster.

I had a very similar experience with a 2013 Explorer without 'collision assist'. I was trying o manage a stop on glare ice, right at the end I just jambed the brakes, ABS kicked in and stopped me. I have new faith in ABS.

I think because i was so close to the guys rear end there was no time once i hit the breaks and the camera knew to activate collision assist. Braked and pulled the vehicle to the left. Unless you experience it your self your talking out your a##..

According to the internet..... ..... Ford's Pre Collision Assist does not auto-steer (computer steer) the vehicle, though it does auto-brake.

Makes sense if you think about it, as a computer steering a car would take many more sensors (certainly more then just a forward one the Bronco has) and algorithmic power then merely braking.

Perhaps you experienced of your vehicle catching more traction on one side and thus yawing, seemingly done on purpose in your particular circumstances...just a guess.
