I've currently got a 2012 Mazda MX-5, a very small car. Before it, I had a Land Rover Discovery II, much larger. I have indoor parking in my building, with a somewhat narrow ramp that curves around into my garage area. With my old Discovery, I was always concerned that I might get too close to the walls, as I turned into my garage.

I am currently considering a new Land Rover Defender 2-door, or a new 2-door Bronco, almost certainly the "base" model, with minimal add-ons. I got to wondering about the electronics available for the car, lane assistance, parking assistance, and so on. My question - do the new Broncos have electronics that would help me keep my car centered between the walls, as I make a 90-degree turn into (or out of) my garage area?

This isn't a must-have option, but if available I think it might be useful. I have many more questions, but I'll do this one question at a time.

I should add that for 30 to 50 years, I always wanted one of the old British Land Rover Defenders, but I know it's not a very good car in today's world. The new Defender in many ways is a better car, but it's more of a luxury car. At this stage of my life (78) I don't need "luxury", just a good solid car, only for on-road use (but good on flooded roads, as my old Discovery II was).

It will beep at you if you get too close and the screen shows a graphic with zones that light up to show how close something is. Also with high pack the 360 cameras can help, they can be activated at low speeds.

The overhead view with Lux package and 360 degree cameras with show you exactly where you are and you can also display the head on view of corners if you wish. To get all the bells and whistles is not cheap but otherwise visibility of vehicle front corners is good without cameras.

A reputable dealer would allow you to drive one home and try it in your driveway and garage (as long as you don't hit anything trying)

Well, so far, so good. I have been going through the "Build your Bronco" page:
build my bronco

Which are the items I need to look for, for the above, including the "high pack 360 camera"?

Years ago, I had no such issues or questions. Now that I'm 78, and have had cataracts corrected in both my eyes, it's something on my mind. A lifetime ago, in Michigan, I had a blue Bronco, and I've got lots of fond memories of it. Now I guess it's a classic.

Every time I go through that "build my Bronco" page I reconsider things, but the basics (2-door, automatic trans) remain the same. I don't need to open my roof, so I assume the molded roof it an appropriate choice. I'm not going off-roading, so the extras to improve off-road performance are not needed. Florida is getting closer and closer to being like Venice, so waterproofing and being high off the ground would be good. My Mazda is bright red, so other people on the road will hopefully notice me, but Florida drivers are so lousy that I no longer trust that. My color choices are between boring white, and too-bright-to-miss orange, which looks so bad to me it's starting to look good. Wheels will be boring steel. Tires will be street. Sound will be basic. Electronics are something I might find fascinating, if they're better than my external GPS stuff.....

High and Lux packages include the 360 camera system.

Where on that "build form" would I find the options for "High and Lux" packages?

It's towards the bottom, right after drivetrain options. They have Mid, High, and Lux packages, but all are not available on all trims. I believe Outer Banks is the cheapest trim that allows for High.

The Cyber Orange is a real eye catcher. Should work well for all the distracted drivers on the road these days. No way someone can say, "i just didn't see you". Mine for reference. Also, the turning radius on these 2 doors is outrageously tight! Plus you have trail turn assist. Turns on a dime. Literally.

I like your car, and your reasoning. I think cyber orange is better for me than white, and that it won't look "dirty" from road dust as quickly. Thanks!

two completely different animals minus the two door aspect. a base defender is over 70, and a badlands or WT with a 2.7 and lux is mid 50s.

the defender is a pure luxury offroad vehicle. lowest end have all the tech packed in. the bronco has some tech, but more utility and has removable roof and doors. reality is get what you want. the defender is a great vehicle. high cost and maintenance but if you can afford it i wouldn't shy away from it.

i love the bronco because it is a utility truck and i can beat it up, take the roof off, etc. and i won't feel bad using it. i don't want to throw muddy gear in a defender with perforated heated and cooled seats, or thrash it when i'm out. this is coming from a land rover guy moving to a bronco.

I live in Miami Beach. There isn't any "off-road" nearby. I live in a condo, with a narrow, curving driveway, and I prefer not to join the other vehicles in my garage with scuff marks from getting too close to the sides.

The choice now, if I do buy anything, is between the 2-door Defender with no options, around $52,000 if I order it and get it half a year later, a lot less than that if I go with a Jeep, and somewhere in-between if I I go with the Bronco - although for various reasons, the Bronco seems to be made of unobtanium. The ones I did find, available soon, cost as much as the Defender, or more.

I like the design of these cars, that they are pretty much safe and rugged, can carry what I need them to carry, and so on. The Defender looks infinitely more comfortable. The Jeep is old technology. Ten years ago, before I bought my 2012 Mazda MX-5 Special Edition, I was driving a ten year old Land Rover Discovery II, with around 100,000 miles on it. I know it's not possible to go back in time and un-do things, but I wish I had found a way to put the old Land Rover in storage or something. Too late for that now.

Several recent driving incidents got me concerned about how safe I am in the Mazda. Drivers in Miami are not as good as what I was used to in Michigan, and I almost got squished like a bug when I large black truck behind me didn't realize all the traffic in front of him was slowing down. The old Discovery II could (and did) roll off a cliff and down a hill without hurting the people inside. I miss that. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if the Bronco and Jeep are equally safe.

Final thought - I see all those oceans of almost completed Broncos, waiting for chips. That's scary. Maybe new technology isn't ready for mass use for cars......

Well kinda mine has a black rectangle around the bronco on the screen that you can’t see so if you were close to something you technically still could hit it on the sides.

I don't know what your timeline is, but the order banks for Broncos are closed right now. We haven't been told when you might be able to order an MY23. So, if that's a consideration, it might be faster to get ANYthing else right now.
