I actually got in a fender bender Wednesday and am in the process of working through all that. Was thinking about how to get an aftermarket bumper out of all of this. Any tips on how to approach the body/shop insurance co. to get that SVC bumper? (funny enough that the exact one I was looking into..)

You can ask them if you can pay the difference. It's possible they'll want you to take a settlement, though, where you get it fixed instead of them (meaning you might get less). Personally I'd have them replace the bumper and fix everything using your body shop, then immediately change it and sell the bumper as basically new.

So awhile back I broke the front axle housing of my 2012 Jeep driving into a severe wash out on a forest road (completely stupid thing, was only going about 5 mph but did not see it, almost flipped).

Realizing my damage was in excess of $3k, I figured out that I could bring the vehicle to a State Farm adjuster and get them to issue me a check minus my deductible based on the market value of the repair. I already had a 4WD shop in mind to do the work and we simply put them in as the company that would be repairing the vehicle.

Long story short, I got a beautiful terraflex front axle setup for a similar price as OEM. Once body work is involved it may get more complicated, but I imagine you could work something similar. Keep in mind that part lead time may be longer than desirable for aftermarket stuff also.

My buddy owns a body shop and I worked with him when I got the cost sheet from my insurance adjuster. OEM headlights were $1600 plus which mine needed to be replaced. So I asked if he could order me Oracle and he said yes and started crunching numbers. Some shops might not order after market and only go OEM. I think it depends on the shop you know. Also there is a huge markup body shops make from parts vendor to what insurance pays for parts. So if your shop does order after market for you, you still need to pay for their mark up difference. The OEM headlights that you and I buy from ford would be $1600 plus, for the body shops they pay around $1100 (I want to open a body shop now lol). Hope that makes sense and helps you in your process. My rig took 2 months because the build time of the SVC bumper. If I went OEM my car would have been done in 2 weeks. I decided the wait was worth it and got what I wanted. Jarret from SVC is great and built my bumper to order pretty fast. Your damage seems pretty close to mine from the outside minus the hood and fender? My adjuster paid out $14,000 for my repairs, these bronco OEM parts are crazy expensive

@foreWard - @Pakman is on the mark. What he had available at the time worked for him. Your mileage will vary.

I did something similar with my Expedition, but as a 2-step. Had the shop take off the damaged parts so they could write an adjustment for hidden damage. They submitted the re-appraisal and got approval for all but $100. Took a week.

Then worked with them to change to different parts and add a few extras. A couple things I paid for myself and paid their labor to install it. They released the truck to me (with the parts off). When all the parts were in, took it back and got the insurance rental.

Repair shops are a business with a high overhead. So yeah, they do charge a mark up. But you probably wouldn't get the parts at their wholesale price either.

Many shops will work with you, once they settled with the insurance people. You just need to be realistic about the process.

Shop your shop. Some shop adjusters are jerks; you are just another client number to them. Other shop adjusters understand what you want to get in the end. Be reasonable, listen to what they are telling you, and ask a lot of questions. That part is free.

If you have a mechanical aptitude, negotiate the shop doing the body work, then you do the bolt on stuff. I suggest they paint your new grill. The clear coat is worth the cost. Work the deal to get your optimum benefit. Stay inside your competence lane. You are paying them for their experience, which you may or may not have. IDK, just saying.

I hope your rig ends up looking the way you envision it to be.

Got in a bad wreck back in Oct. Good thing kiddos were all strapped in and all safe. Frist lane on freeway cruising at 70mph and 4 car pileup first car stopped for no apparent reason (no I was not tailgating). Just lucky no one was seriously hurt. Got some new goodies put on instead of OEM parts. Had to pay some out of pocket but well worth it. Got my SVC bumper, ADV hood and Oracle headlights, trailrax roof rack to name a few. I have a few parts I will be selling soon, I will post in classifieds here (RCI skid, modular bumper baja fog light kit, APG bumper ends, ford roof rack etc). If anyone wants the OEM skid plate or OEM engine skid PM me, you can come pick up and have for free. Drive safe everyone, I am located around mid-town Los Angeles.

Glad your crew is okay and I really like the new look. First impression thoughts are:
1) I’m impressed how little (visible) damage there is to your rig considering oem bumper. I’ve always wondered how the front end might hold up in a wreck and am a bit impressed.
2) I really like the new bumper and skid plate. The look is awesome but that open airflow access could be problematic where I live, drive.
3) I take it you were the last of the 4 car pileup? Or did you have rear damage also from the next guy back?
4) Lastly, I feel a little bad for the minivan. Not sure why but I’m picturing a soccer mom, maybe because the sports kid is in back? Temporary plates indicate it a recent purchase and Honda’s are notorious at emphasizing their crumple zones do crumple. Even without seeing the front, my bet is that one’s totaled.

Yes I was the last car in the 4 car pile up, no one hit me in the rear so we were lucky. My rig is lifted so it went up on the rear minivan bumper and did most damage to the rear van door area. Probably damage would be worse if I was lower and hit flat to the rear. The front of the damage to minivan wasn't that bad, guess the Odessey has solid brakes. Was the dad driving and they were all ok. I had both of my little ones and van had 2 kids as well.

You can put a light bar on the SVC bumper where you can see the radiator. I just decided to go with the light hoop on top to attach LP6 lights. Not sure if I want to add more lights and add the light bar. Most guys with the SVC bumper do one or the other.

Yes I didn't realize the new dealer plates until my buddy mentioned to me later that day. Both the minivan and my rig were the newest in the 4 cars involved. Just glad we all walked away safe.

Your rig looks great! Hopefully I won't get in an accident, but I could see doing something like this if I do.

I wouldn't spend a cent on ADV unless my life depends on it.
Yeah I heard people had issues with ADV but When I called them they had the one in stock and shipped right away no issues.

Please don't take my comment as an endorsement for ADV. Regardless of anyone's personal feelings for ADVs business practices, that hood looks good on Pakman's rig! I'm aware of their hardtop issue. I really hope, for sake of the hard-working people who spent their money, that ADV rights-the-ship on that one. That's why I waited 2-years to get my BL WITH the HT! Have a nice day. :)

I flipped my bronco on a trail back in August. Busted my roof up. Ford wanted to charge the insurance company 10k for a replacement... yes 10k... so now I am the proud owner/waiter of an Armadillo designs all aluminum top, fully loaded with about $1500 to spare! Thank you Ford adjusters!

Update on mine if anyone cares. LOL. I couldn't get them to let me go with an aftermarket bumper, so I am stuck there. But they are replacing the entire steering rack as they "heard a click" and also agreed to replace my icon tie rods and diode dynamics fog lights - I was worried I'd have to repurchase all that.
