Anyone changed out their steering wheel?

I'm not a huge fan of the steering wheel in the base model. Has anyone changed out their base steering wheel for a higher trim level wheel, or put in an aftermarket wheel? Maybe even just had the base wheel wrapped in leather or the likes?

Would like to hear some feedback from those that have or that have thought about doing this as well.

Pics are appreciated with what you did and parts used, etc... if you've actually done this.

There a quite a bit of threads of people who re-wrapped their steering wheels. Search around. I haven't seen anyone swap in an aftermarket one yet.

I swapped my base with the leather big bend part (M2DZ-3600-BB). It was pretty easy to swap and cost about $300 from ruxer parts. The oem leather wheel isn’t fantastic, but better than the plastic to me. I’ve considered getting my spare base one wrapped with nicer nappa leather but haven’t been able to prioritize it yet. I wonder if the braptor steering wheel would work

Note worthy steps: disconnect the battery first. youtubes I found suggested using an allen wrench to disconnect the air bag clip. Mine wasn’t nearly long enough for me so I used a tent spike that worked great. Here’s a picture with the airbag assembly out to show what you are doing when disconnecting the clip. Also once the airbag is out, you’ll need a larger torx plus bit (can’t remember the size) to remove the steering wheel. There are torque specs for that bolt when putting it back on and I read to use locktite

I'm thinking about buying the OEM with leather as well and having the dealer shop do the swap.

Do any Ford employees (or otherwise) know if changing the wheel voids the warranty? I suppose the dealer won't do it if it that's the case.

I dunno... The heated Steering Wheel on my WT (Lux) is sweet. It was actually the very first thing I noticed in the Bronco when I drove it home. Not the 'base' wheel, I know, but the leather wheel is nice.

It shouldn't void the warranty but it's always up to the dealer. You'll have an easier time trying to have the fuel pump warranted and a harder time trying to get an airbag connection warranted due to the relationship between the potential failed part and your modification.

FYI cross references the clock spring is the same with the upgraded steering wheel if you want to avoid issues. Also use the largest allen wrench that fits in to pull the air bag.

Its a half beer job, but like a 3-4 beer pre-game as pulling the air bag requires the battery to be disconnected.
