About 5 hours into my 6+ hr trip from San Diego to Phx, the A/C stopped blowing cold air and only blew ambient temps… I tried shutting off the air and fan, letting it rest while still driving, turn it on and it would blow cool for a minute or so before returning to ambient temperature. This went on for 30+ mins until I decided to stop at a gas station and take a look.

When I stopped and shut off the car, I saw all the radiator flaps behind the grill were closed shut so no air was coming in directly through the grill (the vents behind the bumper for the oil cooler below were open).

I left the hood open for 10-15 mins w/the vehicle off (engine temp was still fine).

restarted, radiator flaps opened, and regular cold air for the rest of the ride home.

Anyone else experienced this?

The radiator flaps have nothing to do with AC air in the cabin...sounds like you have a low refrigerant charge and the evaporator coil was iced up. Letting it set allowed the ice on the coil to melt, that's why you had cool air after.

I had a similar issue, intermittent AC cooling. I found I had a bad connection at the AC pressure switch. I pulled the connector, cleaned the terminal and haven't had any issues since.
