Hello guys,

My dad gave me his car and I'm not good with cars so I need help with my 1980 Ford Bronco with over 100K Mileage. When I hitting the brake, I hear squeaking noises and it irritates me hearing that. Does it sound good to replace the brake pads only? or I should also replace the rotors?

Also, I already bought brake pads from R1 concepts Optimum Oep and ready to go to a mechanic. I'm just waiting for your advice for approval if I should also buy a rotor.

This forum is for the 2021 Bronco (6th Generation). I’m sure there might be a few on here that might be able to help, but you’ll probably have better luck elsewhere. Best of luck fixing your Bronco. (y)

[banned site].com has everything you'll ever need to know about that truck and then some. lmctruck.com and broncograveyard.com have a lot of parts and from what I remember, decent prices.

Haha that's odd. Maybe full size bronco dot com without the spaces?

Somebody comes to this board seeking the collective wisdom of the members here and you blow them off with no link to another site? We're better than that...

No shit! Hopefully owners of older Broncos step up. Did they see the location is Phillipines? Bronco 6g is probably dominating search engines.
Shame, shame, shame

No we’re not. Besides, where would I send him? To a site I never visited? I was being helpful by letting him know that he would get a more informed opinion elsewhere. Sure, there might be a couple people here that could help, but that question is probably already answered twenty times on another forum.

If you hear squeaking it's most likely ost likely but not definitely) the metal tabs on the pad hitting the rotor telling you its time for new pads. (assuming the squeaking sound is metal on metal sound)

Which could also mean grooves in the rotor depending on how long you've heard this noise.

Luckily for you, back in the 80's rotors were thick enough that a mechanic could cut them if the damage not too bad (depends on your mechanic). Would need to see a pic of the rotor to give an opinion on whether or not it could be cut (if needed).

Got any pics of the rotors? Even if it’s just through the holes in the wheels. Or maybe a short video made by a friend while you’re stopping. Is is just a squeak, or a long squeal until you come to a complete stop?

Mechanics don't like when you bring your own parts. It's like bringing a steak to a steakhouse.
Recommend taking it to a shop and have it looked at (hopefully someone you trust). Brake pads are cheap having rotors done price goes up quite a bit. Don't forget that has drums in the back.

The squeak could also be just A) some grit between the pad and rotor OR B) the pad moving a little bit on the caliper piston.

Pads are the first step no matter what else you end up needing.

I would recommend join the Bronco forum for the 1980 model year.

To answer your specific question I recommend always replacing the brake pads and rotors. Always replace both together. Or at a minimum get the old rotors turned along with new pads although if the rotors get too thin you risk warping them resulting in pulsating brake pedal.

Remember to put the anti-squeal compound on the back side of the pads when you install them. And I'd recommend lubing the brake caliper slides too and check for broken seals, etc.

Brake jobs are easy and don't require that many tools. Just read and read some more. Shops get such big bucks for brake jobs and I can do front or rear for usually less than a hundred )parts), including new rotors.
