Yeah, plastic film a fraction of a millimeter thick isn't going to hold up long against a persistent blast of gravel. Most of those films are only rated to last 5-7 years before they look bad anyway. Mudflaps might not be pretty but they'll work.

If it wouldn't code out you could install a fancy gravity fed "tank" on the roof with some bungee cords and a bypass line. It might not run great or be efficient, but you can make it to pavement. *some safety disclaimers may apply

It isn't a fixed value, it is based on the height of your headlight. IIRC it should be slightly lower than the center of the headlight. I'm sure there are some YouTube directions out there.
