Something to keep in mind about different experiences with using 4A all the time is driving habits. If most of the miles put on the vehicle are highway, the clutch in the transfer case would see very little speed differential. Mostly around town would be a little different.
The clutch in the transfer case acts as a
“differential”. Half of the plates are splined to the front drive shaft and the other half are splined to the rear. Any time the truck is turning the clutch has to slip.
Yep, and don’t make the assumption that AWD doesn’t have concerns. Ford sells several models that have AWD and we see clutch failures in the RDUs regularly. Different circumference tires, a low tire, towing one with the front wheels up and rear wheels down, or just worn out from mostly city...
That’s exactly right. As I said in an earlier post, sometimes sales and marketing people say what they want to say to make the product appealing to certain customers.
If they say something that is not true, like you can run in 4HI all the time, engineering will dispute that aggressively...
I was a Field Service Engineer with Ford for 35 years before I retired 8 years ago and went to a Ford dealer as the shop foreman. In my time at Ford I saw 4 wheel drive go from a shifter in the floor with manual hubs to auto locking hubs, to push button on-the fly, to torque on demand 4A...
There isn’t anything written to say that 4A can’t be used all the time, because theoretically it can be. For sales and marketing purposes it’s good to say you can set it to 4A and leave it there and not have to understand when to use 4 wheel drive. A good portion of people who own Broncos, and...
A brick doing 80 MPH in a 30 MPH crosswind is going to cause a lot of turbulence and turbulence causes noise. A guy stopped me in the hotel parking lot while we were in Colorado on vacation last week to ask about my Bronco. He asked if it was quiet, the answer was a quick NO! I didn’t buy it...
Why does everyone want to run in 4A on dry pavement? There is no benefit, it causes more wear and tear on driveline parts, and lowers fuel economy. 4A is very useful in the winter when you might need 4 wheel drive at times, but 4HI is not needed or appropriate. I just don’t see why 4A is...
Bummer, hopefully they find the leak. There were some Special Service Messages and/or TSBs about windshield leaks. You can test their repair by taping a garden hose to the roof above the leak area and letting it run for a while and looking for any evidence of a leak under the dash around the...
It could be that it had a technical issue in shipping. At the dealership I work for we contacted with Finkle, the company in charge of shipping Ford’s vehicles, to fix vehicles that have a problem that keeps them from being shippable. The problem could be something that keeps it from running...
That is true about ECT sensors not reading correctly if they are not submerged in coolant, but 2.7 and I think all EcoBoost engines use Cylinder Head Temp sensors. They are dry, the screw into the head, not a coolant jacket.
Not uncommon on Ecoboost engines. The boost makes it harder to jump the plug gap so coil voltage goes up to make a hotter spark to get across the gap. That hotter spark erodes the electrodes quicker and the gap gets wider and too wide for the coils to fire under heavy loads, then the misfiring...
