What Percentage of Owners Off-Road?!

Nope. And that was one of my thoughts looking at one at the Ford dealership. Built for show, not actual use. Too wide, too heavy, too Hummer. I see ‘em driving around town, but have never seen one on the trails.

One of the things that entertains and frustrates me is how a lot of forum members seem to not appreciate how different the demographic is here, on this forum, versus the average mainstream Bronco owner. (So folks here are always, amusingly, asking for Ford to do things that most mainstream buyers would *never* want, that are strictly enthusiast options — but in their defense, it’s amazing that Ford actually made a Bronco with a snorkel and still makes a 2DR. We’re lucky.) People who take their Jeep or Bronco off-road are actually a very small percentage of buyers, perhaps as low as 10% (according to Google searched stats). I’m wondering how that compares to the population here. Vote!

This was a HUGE hurdle when i worked at Ford on off-road capability. The constant pushback was that “most owners never go off-road” other than maybe a dirt road to a cabin or fishing spot. So it became a struggle to defend a Bronco program or advocate for off-road capability.

But what was often missed was that in certain ways, that low statistic doesn’t matter. The demand for Bronco, and particularly the Sasquatch package, I think proves that people will buy something that looks cool and capable even if they don’t even have a plan to go off-road. Sure the 2-door is a hard sell since it cuts practicality if you have kids or dogs etc, but those big 35” tires and “check-the-box” hardcore features sold even to pavement dwellers. And some just want the status symbol of getting the top-of-the-line model options like a Raptor even if they never plan to use the capability.

Some of those Marketing naysayers were probably surprised by how well some options sold given the market statistics of limited actual off-road use. That realization probably began after the first F150 SVT Raptor sales took off.

Thank goodness they did it right and gave it real real off road chops. I ALWAYS HATED IT back in the day when the "sport" model of a car was the same POS with a sticker package thrown on it.

Do you think the SXS craze helped, hurt or was indifferent for the Bronco? Those things can cost as much or more than a Bronco.

The new blazer still pains me. Chevy missed a huge opportunity, whereas Ford seized it with the Bronco

Indifferent I guess - I don’t honestly recall any talk about SXS like “see there is a market for off-road we can sell to” or “see, if people want to go off-road, they‘ll just get a SXS”.

Or Truck. When I got my first pickup, a Chevy S-10, one of the available trims was "Sport". Graphics, carpeting, bucket seats, etc. but zilch for performance.

Another for sand. Grabbed the black diamond for this specific reason. Vinyl seats, floors. Super easy to clean. rear diff lock is all i need on the beach. We go 2 to 3 times a year. Honestly the black diamond should have been called the outer banks. Black diamond honestly sounds more for lux packages. Just my opinion.

Yeah... I think this is more of a factor than I realized for sure.

I was talking to my father about this a while ago—he worked at Ford in the 1980s-1990s.

The simple idea of owning a vehicle that can off-road (or tow/haul, in the case of the F-series) was a massive driver of sales back then, and the marketing & brand teams spent a lot of time & energy targeting those folks who wanted a vehicle that looked like it could tow/haul/off-road but didn't actually need to tow/haul/off-road.

That's a big reason why they replaced the Bronco II with the Explorer, Bronco with Expedition, and started selling more luxury-oriented SuperCrew pickups.
