Permitting Broncos in Colorado

I wheel in Colorado hopefully at least once a year. I was unaware of proper permitting until this year. It is SO important to pay your part in keeping the trails open.

I bought two permits and likely won’t even make it this year.

We went to the San Juans last year for our first trip to CO. I was under the impression that I needed an OHV permit for the Bronco. I stopped at the USFS office in Durango and was told that I did not need a permit for a licensed vehicle. That's all I know.

Sounds like Arizona. You don't need permits for licensed vehicles. You do need a permit for an OHV (Off HIghway Vehicle) which would mean sideby sides, etc.

I would suggest watching the video. Many trails are actually roads, Black Bear Pass for example is a road, but Camp Bird is a trail I believe.

Even in my home state there's different regulations depending on what the particular place you're trying to drive is. For instance, MOST routes (because a lot of SxS's and 'trail rigs' are too wide for actual trails, per state rules) if you're running a licensed/registered vehicle with a plate, you don't need ORV tags. There are some areas, though, where regardless of what you're driving, you DO need ORV tags. So a lot of people will just buy the tags and put them on their rear window to CYA.

Sounds like it's pretty similar there - some of what you're driving doesn't require tags because you're a plated vehicle, some do even though you're a plated vehicle. In which case it's better to just get them - keeps you out of trouble. For that, anyway.

Pay to play is also a thing. Permit money helps keep access open. When I used to snowmobile, I bought club memberships for all the places I rode. Some years, over five memberships. Those groomers are thirsty and break all the time!

Oh that’s cool. Thanks for the info. I live in Wyoming and surely enough there are places for trails but it’s good to know others.
