Definitely not “car” since that’s typically used on passenger cars like sedans and coupes.

The SUV moniker has been taken over by unibody vehicles which the Bronco isn’t.

It shares its chassis with the Ranger, so it’s more truck than not in that regard.

Although, it can’t really tow like a truck; it performs better off-road than most trucks. So it is something different… I typically just call it “the Bronco”, otherwise it’s called a truck.

FWIW- the Chevy camp has this same debate for Tahoes. Built on the “General Motors Truck” (GMT) chassis shared with Silverados. Some still say it isn’t a truck cause there’s no bed. I say a pickup truck has a bed just like a box truck has a big box on the back. Both are trucks tho. Sorta like a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn’t a square. Truck is real general, then as you further specify the name it clarifies components.

Ford groups it with, and calls it a SUV and car. 🤣 It is not grouped in the trucks and vans by Ford. The Bronco Raptor is grouped with Performance Vehicles.

The Bronco was the first one to use the phrase sports utility vehicle in ads, Jeep was the first to use "SUV", first with the SJ the with the XJ "unibody". So I don't think one a can say "SUV" had to be body on frame any more that an "SUV" had to have any 3 on the tree, or a shortened frame.
The Bronco is a Wagon.

My N.J. Registration lists it as a wagon, I personally would Call it a truck, over a wagon

The 1966 the Bronco was available in 3 configurations:

  • Roadster (U13)
  • Sports Utility (U14) aka Half-cab/truck
  • Wagon (U15) aka station-wagon
Hats off to N.J. DMV as well as the ICBC, for knowing the Bronco's history.

This is worse: I'm in BC and the provincial insurance company (ICBC) lists my Badlands as a station wagon on the registration!
My insurance calls it a Sport Wagon. So the text reads Bronco Sport, but with the wagon part truncated. Thought at first they had the wrong vehicle insured.

“Car” seems colloquially an alternative word for “automobile” so I probably use that in general, but with friends/family who know what i drive I’ll say “Bronco”.

If I were asked specifically “what type of vehicle do you drive” I’d probably say “an SUV“ or “a 4x4”.

From 2020: https://corporate.ford.com/articles/history/the-ford-bronco/
The Ford Bronco became the first automobile called out specifically as a “Sports-Utility Vehicle,”
*also, I don’t understand why Ford changed the meaning of G.O.A.T. from “Goes Over All Terrain” to their current official definition of “Goes Over Any Type of Terrain” which would make it G.O.A.T.T. or G.O.A.T.O.T. 🤔

Bronco or Truck. Agree that truck doesn't sound completely correct.
