Fast idle and "clunk" shifting into reverse or drive. Is this normal?

I found that, if you move the shifter from park to neutral first. Then into gear, it helps.

I also get a clunk when shifting to reverse while idling above 800rpm.

That’s pretty normal. The higher the rpm, the harsher the transmission engagement is going to be.

I'm surprised there's barely any other posts about this. I've owned a lot of vehicles that had a lot of issues that never bothered me...but this clunk almost made me jump and I had to research it asap.

Yeah I get this too, it takes forever to get off of high idle even when it's warm. A good 5 minutes on a hot day and a good 15 or more when super cold. The clunk happens as well and sometimes will happen at normal idle as well.

That doesn't sound right to me. I have always been impressed how smooth my Bronco shifts into gear from park or neutral. Mine is a 2.7L but the transmissions should be the same. Maybe they are programmed differently but I don't know why.

When I start up in the morning, I start the engine, fasten by seat belt and shift from park to "D". Then let up on the brake and let it start moving by itself and then ease into the accelerator pedal and drive slowly for the first couple minutes.

The only light clunking I ever get is when the transmission is cold and I am coming to a stop. The transmission shifts down kind of harsh while braking but only does it once. It doesn't do it in the morning and normally happens in the evening when I start to come home from work at the first stop sign.

When I start my 1969 428CJ powered Fairlane Cobra cold, it is a beast when I shift into reverse. I let it idle a short time, and kick it down a little (carbureted), then shift into reverse standing on the brakes as hard as I can. It feels like it is going to twist the driveshaft out of the thing. I get no clinking but the rear tires screech. I can minimize it if I put it in neutral while warming then shift into drive for a bit before slowly shifting into reverse. It still happens but not as harsh. I know this is not a good comparison, but thought I would give a worse example.
