Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 has probably the strongest base stocks of any mass-market 30 weight and an excellent HTHS, I'd say it's the best choice outside of the boutiques.

Valvoline Restore & Protect is the best option if you want to stay on an API oil for warranty purposes.

These oil threads crack me up. Because while I never had to use oil cans, I remember a lot of the other stuff.

I also remember my dad putting 1 quart of Slick 50 in their 1990 GMC suburban (350 chevy) at the first oil change. He might have done that for a few oil changes, after 35 years and being a kid at the time the memory is a little fuzzy. Beyond that, it was all Quaker State, straight 30-weight in the summer, 10W30 in the winter, every 3,000 miles, with AC Delco filters (PF35 to start, then PF1218 when he got his truck for commonality, same filter but with a built-in check valve). That motor went at least 400k (when dad sold it) with nothing but plugs, wires, a fuel pump (electric in-tank), and a couple alternators...and 3 transmissions because roughly every 90k miles the reverse sungear would grenade. This included my younger sister 'doing an oil change,' but forgetting to put the oil back in, then driving it several hundred miles before she said it was ticking. It sure was, and no oil on the dipstick...pulled it in the garage, pulled the oil pan plug...and nothing came out. So dumped 5 quarts in, it quieted right down and behaved as normal.

Sometime in the mid-'00s, I switched to Mobil 1 for all my gas motors, and Rotella T6 for my diesels. Whatever filter worked, usually Motorcraft for Fords or Fram...whatever their midgrade one was...for everything else. Change it every 5k.

Now I don't have a place to do most oil changes, so I end up having the dealer do them. Same oils, but whatever filters they put on. When we're out of warranty, I'll have to look at doing them myself again.

Fucking oil threads....my semi runs T6 Rotella and gets changed at 100K intervals - oil analysis is perfect every time. Y'all wasting money and crude on needless oil changes. Maybe if all your trips are 10 mins to the local ABS, than yeah, change at 5K - even that is too often with the modern synthetics. If you drive more than hour at a time, at the very least, change when the rev counter sets the light or message on your EVIC. Stop wasting oil!!!!!!!

5k is a perfectly reasonable oil change interval. The last oil change I did on my K20C2 Civic was at 7k miles per the maintenance minder, and a UOA showed that the oil had sheared out of grade.

So true..turbos blowing fuel backinto crankcase and short trips are deemed severe use 3000 miles with high quality 100% synthetic. Catchcans can extend to 4-5K miles.

The fuel in crancase is a killer.

It's no wonder Ford recommends 3000 miles max oil change intervals on their turbo charged engines.

What oil were you running? Hard to believe Mobil 1 or Amsoil, Rotella, etc. would fail that soon.

Whatever crap the dealership put in. The poor performance of that bulk oil was incidentally the driver for me to switch to doing my own oil changes on Valvoline Restore & Protect.

Well, statistically, the vast majority of car trips are <=10 minutes or less. I don't really use my cars that way, but the vast majority of people do.
