Does the rear bumper need to come off? Don't have my bronco yet but every other hitch I've put on I've never removed the bumper.

Rear Bumper
Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
   Refer to: Jacking and Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

Vehicles With: Rear Fog Lamps/Rear Parking Aid

1. Disconnect the rear bumper wiring harness connector.

All vehicles

1. Disconnect the rear bumper wiring harness connector.

1. On both sides.
   Remove the bolt.
   Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

1. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.
   Remove the bolts and the rear bumper.
   Torque: 59 lb.ft (80 Nm)

Installation

All vehicles

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Have to remove because of the way the bolts are installed

Oh wow - you sure do. Always have used Draw-tite hitches and all of the bolts come with wires on them that you use to thread the bolts through the frame and hitch - not sure that would work in this application though.

Maybe one of the dealer guys can answer, are those recovery loops a part that cross references to other vehicles? They look familiar, like I might have some from an F150... not the strongest design, but at least they are mounted to the frame rail. The thin-ish sheet metal the loop is welded to is a failure point if the pull is off-axis to the frame rail, but you're pretty stuck in a ravine if you bust one off...
Blech, that hitch looks worthless and weak [/Dee Schneider voice], a near exact copy of where and how the Jeep Wrangler hitch mounts. I'm looking at the Ranger hitches tonight to see how they mount...

Leave the bumper on and put the bolts in from the other side with the nut on right side of your picture.
