Troubles in Jeepville?

Friend of mine was considering a Jeep Wrangler until he read some recent Consumer Reports reviews. Of course the Jeep dealer just pooh-poohed the CR review saying that the Jeep is misunderstood. I wasn't sure what he was referring to until I saw this little beauty this morning. I guess "misunderstood" is a relative term, but to CR it means quality. Ooops....

I currently drive a 2018 soft top Unlimited. Saw this post the morning after I got my 5th recall notice from Stellantis. And, it has been in for repaints for corrosion 3 times already (and going in again).

I'm not a hater—hoping this competition will make things better—for everyone.

That said, my Bronco order is in.

I have been renting a Jeep for the last 7 months. Part of the time I had a gladiator and now I have a Sahara wrangler.

went on a short trip and when I returned Wednesday night the Jeep said it wasn’t in park and WOULD NOT START. I came back the next day after getting a ride and it was dead dead.
Jumped it and it’s working now but agreed, glad I’m not getting a wrangler.

Check your history lessons, CR has been giving Jeep poor marks for years.

Your current buzz words, cancel culture, is a little bit over used.

I was VERY close to buying a JL Rubicon last year. I have a 18 year old sedan that is a great car, but not good for my family and lifestyle. We used my wife's SUV for all of the outdoor stuff we like to do... camping, biking, skiing/snowboarding, etc.

For the Jeep Wrangler, I knew about reliability issues first hand from friends that have these but I was willing to swallow that pill to get the capability and functionality the the JL Rubicon has. Fortunately, Ford kept me from making the purchase by teasing the Bronco before the reveal and then I was able to get an early reservation on reveal day.

It's been a long wait (with 2-3 more months still to wait) but worth it for me. Seeing stuff like this from CR makes me very relieved that I held out from that purchase and the wait for my new Bronco a little easier to take.

I love my Jeep. The only reason I’m selling it is because of the bronco...otherwise i would put big axles under it and keep it.
It does gets shitty MPG, it’s a little flighty when the wind picks up, it’s kind of small, but i like it. It’s fun to drive, pretty capable and the kids love it. The interior isn’t terrible and has most creature comforts (more than my Bronco will have for the most part because I’m going with a “base”, lol).
The bronco will have big shoes to fill.

It is for sale if anyone is looking, LOL.

We get CR and it seems like everything I like they seem to bash on.

I had an early 2018 JL Sport S 2dr hardtop up until recently. It did suffer somewhat with respect to shop time but it also had good points. I've owned a few Wranglers over the years and the JL did some things very well. 20mpg all day long for a Jeep is impressive. The 4cyl turbo with auto trans had plenty of power. I did have to get a different steering stabilizer and gearbox (under warranty) but even without those it was the best driving Jeep I've owned.

I'm sure the Bronco will have its share of niggles as well - but I still cant wait!

Hate to be a bubble burster ive seen some posts here saying that they are getting the bronco to keep in the family and pass down to the kids and such.

One look under that hood at that double turbo snake nest will convince ya this anit no 200,000 miler enjoy it while you can.

O hell in 10 years if the engine can last that long the kids can just pull it out and throw in a battery. LOL

Without checking myself, is CR ever favorable to any manufacturer that's not Japanese? At least that's how I remember it over the past 10-15 years.

I don't think Jeep deserves an excellent quality score, but CR's reputation is far from golden in my book.

I fixed that for you. It's well known that CR doesn't accept advertising money. They don't take "pay-offs". They don't sell the rights to companies to allow them to advertise their "wins".

Hey, if that's how you believe Not-for-profits to run then that's awesome!

I'm sure your charitable contributions reflect that as you exceed the standardized deduction. I'm of the opinion that charitable contributions should move back to being a Schedule A deduction to encourage more giving. If the world had more folks like you and I giving over the SD amount it would be a better place.

Multiple posts showing Jeep quality higher than Ford (per quoted stats), but people keep talking about crappy Jeep quality. Only on a Ford forum.

Point taken, but those line bar graphs don't tell the same story. Those show number of problems per hundred vehicles, but not what kind of problems. I'll take a cracked windshield washer reservoir cap over a transmission crapping out any day. The Wrangler has a long tradition of being sub-par in significant, expensive ways. I've got a friend whose entire auto repair business is fixing Jeeps. He could tell me the worst years and the common problems. But also, that Jeep reliability number is for the whole brand. It seems that there are other Jeep models that owners are quite happy with and much more reliable. Without the Wrangler in the mix, the Jeep brand would probably look much better.

I don't get your comment at all. I think maybe you quoted the wrong person.

My question was this:

That's quite a shot across the bow without anything specific backing it up. What started as a very specific claim that CR is taking payments in exchange for favorable reviews has morphed into a more vague claim that it's well-hidden in their financial report. Specifically what in their financial report do you think represents "20% of their income is nebulously identified"? As in, which page and line item is where you think that is occurring? It's certainly difficult to refute any claim like that without knowing where to look.
