Reverse takes a while to engage after siting for a long time

Hello all,

I noticed that if my bronco sits for more than 4-5 days, when I start it and put it in reverse, it takes a while for the gear to fully engage. Like as if reverse is slipping.

Is this a common quirk on these transmissions?

I am thinking it’s probably the oil completely draining out of the transmission and needs a few seconds to refills and repressurize the whole thing.

Mine has been doing that lately. It makes a loud clunk going from Park to Reverse on initial startup. It only does it from a cold start on the first drive after a day or so of being parked.

How many miles? Have you had the transmission fluid changed at all?

Mine seem to do this only when it's cold and i put it in reverse right away notice it most backing out of the garage mine has always been like that

In older cars it was usually a sign of low fluid, as the convertor would drain down after sitting, and it would take a few seconds to pump what fluid there was up to where it needed to go.

These days could be lots of things.

Definitely shouldn't need a fluid exchange then, can rule out low fluid most likely

Because the torque converter drains back into the pan after sitting a few days, it takes a few seconds for the pump to refill and repressurize the system. Waiting 5–10 seconds after a cold start before shifting into gear will resolve the issue.
However, if it clunks hard or takes more than 10 seconds, have your dealer check the fluid level. There is also a TSB 23-2352 that addresses this exact quirk, which they can fix with a quick powertrain control module (PCM) update.
