Skid plate protective coating -> Truck Bed Coating or similar product?

For folks who have skid plates that are scratched up or will be scratched up - does anyone pre-coat or post coat them with any kind of added protective coating, something thicker than just paint? If so, what is a good product to use?

I don't think there is a protective coating the will stand up to the abuse armor can get. I just get out a rattle can of black paint and touch up the scratches to help keep them from rusting. Works great until the the next time, then I repeat.

Whatever you put on, it’s just gonna get scratched off if you’re actually using your bronco. So don’t worry about it. Just cut it with something before winter if you live in the salt band.

I wouldn't do anything expensive. You might get some Steel-IT and cover the bottom, then maybe get some roll-on or spray on truck bed liner. @broadicustomworks might have some ideas that keep it cheap but at least modestly effective. They're basically wear items if you're using them, though, so assume you'll be replacing them anyway.

If you use them they won't stay pristine.
With that said, one could Rhino line them but it is honestly wasted $ and effort.
Sure, they would look really cool until the first time they get hit or scraped over a rock.
Liner products do have slightly better resistance to damage but they are not some magical armor and will scrape clean off just like paint will.
Honestly best and cheapest method is to get some quality spray can Primer+Paint in a satin black and just recoat/touch them up as you see fit.
I do this every once in a while myself.
At first you'll probably want to remove and paint because it's more professional. After a time or two you'll get on a creeper with a spray can and some cardboard to block the overspray and call it good.
I have 2 front skids, one that has damage from wheeling and one that is like new. 4 quick M15 bolts with a cordless and about 3 minutes (or less) and I'm set for either wheelin' or profilin'.

Bottom line is there is no magic product. If you want them as-new, don't ever take it off-road.
If you want them as-new, remove, sand, feather scratches out, Epoxy prime, paint with a satin black and stay on pavement forever afterwards (not directed at OP, general statement).
