So I Pop Started my Bronco - it did not like that.

Bronco was parked in my driveway which is steep, i turned on ignition to put down windows and get situated. Stepped on brake and released parking brake and just let her roll. Put clutch in and let it out in first gear smoothly started right up then as I stepped on the gas and turned on to the road she just shut off and threw a bunch of alert on the screen. (sorry no pics as I was in the middle of the street at this point). Tried to restart and no luck. Let her roll back so I could park on the street and shut off and tried again no luck turned off and went inside. Tried again after 5 minutes as miraculously was all better like nothing ever happened.

Anyone else bump start theirs and had issues? Does this mean with a dead batter I couldn't pop start it?

I'm more just curious. Thanks!

There was a thread about this a while back and they figured it would not start at all? Magic ya proved them wrong…now to keep it running…

Yeah somewhere in the Owners Manual it says …
No, don’t do that.

A lot of folks tried. A few could get it like you did - it would think about it really hard but they couldn’t keep it running. The button rather than a turn switch means the computer has to decide between ACC on and engine run, and it won’t let you just bump start from one to the other the same way a key switch just wouldn’t care so long as you had it On.

Consensus was … just carry a jump pack or jumper cables if you are worried about dead battery starts. Way easier than trying to fake the computer out and get it to leave the engine running

I tried to do the same thing and had similar results. I was afraid was going to have to call for a tow. But the computer reset itself after a few minutes.

Ducatti1098 posted a thorough description of how the start sequence works. There's no way you can push start a Bronco.

This thread is a "flash-back" to my days of youth. We constantly bump-started many vehicles on the farm. Glad your Bronco settled back to normal.

I tried to do that with my Bronco.
It started and then immediately shut itself down with a ton of error codes.
After I shut off the ignition, I let the Bronco sit on the end of the driveway for a minute or two.
Then I tried starting it with the start button and all the error codes cleared.

Yeah, the old days of starting a dead-battery car by rolling and popping the clutch are gone.
At least we still have a manual transmission to roll our own gear selection.
It won't be very long before that's gone too.

After reading your post and Ducati1098 write up (post 4) I wondered if you (or anyone) pushed the start button just before the clutch bump?

Seems the computer needs a second begin the sequence, before it engages the ‘ Starter ( bump turns over the motor ) ???

Any gear will work. Except reverse unless you're backing down a hill. First gear is convenient since you don't have to downshift to drive away. I've used other gears. Which did you use?

I had a ‘74 Volvo in college that I roll-started in reverse from its uphill parking spot at my apartment. I did that for a few months until I got a new battery.

I miss the days when working on a car only required a little shade-tree experience. I will admit that YouTube tutorials would’ve come in handy back then!

These things are so “smart” they’re stupid - just like the engineers who designed them. As an engineer, I feel completely comfortable calling engineers stupid.
