HORRIBLE Roof Squeak Fixed

We've had a 2dr WT for over a year and just bought a 2024 4dr WT. The 2dr had some squeaks in the roof and I had used Sil-Glyde lube purchased off Amazon on several seals. It helped quiet some of the noise. Well, the new 4dr had quickly developed a HORRENDOUS squeak somewhere in the back. A friend with a '22 4dr WT correctly identified the source as being the seal on the rear glass that is against the tail gate. After verification of the source, I cleaned the seal with 99% IPA and applied sparingly with a very, very thin layer of Sil-Glyde seal lube, working it into the sealing surfaces. The squeak was gleefully ELIMINATED! I went down to my buddies place, and did the same on his '22 WT. Worked like a charm on his, too. He was shocked I so quickly eliminated that squeak that has been driving him crazy for over 2-1/2 years. Give it a shot. Note that it is a thick silicone grease. You don't want to get this stuff on any surfaces PRE-PAINT or you will have paint adhesion problems as it is extremely difficult to remove. Don't use too much, either or it will collect dust, dog hair, and ever other particle that gets close. Not sure how long an application will last, but it's easy to apply and a single tube could probably treat 1/2 of the 6g Broncos ever built.

It's a true wonder lube that I believe was first developed by DuPont for use by NASA. You can get Krytox GPL 105 off of Amazon or just do a web search as you'll probably find it cheaper elsewhere. You just need a really small bottle and it'll last you years.

I'll have to look at the bottle but I think I bought an ounce, possibly less, for like $35. It's since doubled in price but a little goes a long, long way and it never seems to wear out. It was actually OEM specified for my Audi RS on most of the car's seals. Only reason I knew about it.

We would use Braycote 803 which is basically the same as Krytox and crazy expensive for our o-rings as well. It is a white PTFE based grease with low outgassing properties. The standard silicone vacuum grease would probably be fine in this application. No concern about outgassing and degrading the vacuum In the Bronco.

No doubt, what hasn't in the last 5 years? I'm sure Audi calls for a premium product. Looks like DuPont actually spun off much of their chemical business into a company called Chemours back in 2015. Have you seen the movie, "Dark Waters"? "Foxcatcher" is another Mark Ruffalo movie involving the du Pont family.

The Sil-Glyde is $16 for an 8 oz tube of thickened grease type material. It's specifically formulated for this kind of thing and seems to work pretty well if you want to try it sometime. I had put too much on my 2 door in a few places and it collected a lot of garbage. I thought about using a DuPont dry PTFE spray material I have, but the spray would have been a PITA to keep contained during application.

I can be fairly tolerant of various squeaks and rattles, but this particular squeak was going to drive me absolutely crazy, and any fix for that (Krytox, Sil-Glyde, or otherwise) which works and at any price is a good fix in my book!

The grease is probably a better way to go versus the oil or spray. But, either way, it doesn’t take much. This is a case where the bigger the glob, the better the job does not apply!

Lol, no doubt! Most people think, "If a little is good, A LOT must be great!" I was custodian for solid film lubricants in my old job. That stuff is applied 0.0002" to 0.0005" thickness. Thickness is key to achieve high load carrying capability. But people wanted to layer that stuff on THICK.

it was tough to get new people to understand the grease was used to reduce surface tension on the o-rings and wasn’t intended to fill in gaps to stop leaks.

Appreciate the heads up on this. I just ordered a tube of GPL 207 Grease off Amazon for about $22. Will try it on my Steeda spring install. Clearly, mountains of bearing grease from the factory doesn't keep the clutch spring quiet; maybe this will!

@Ape Factory was the Krytox fan. I had used the Sil-Glyde on the hatch glass to tailgate seal with success.
Good luck with the clutch spring. The Krytox might work well there.

Not that it makes a difference in this application, Krytox is Teflon based and Sil-Glyde is silicon based. Either would be an excellent choice for lubricating rubber seals.
