Hey guys. I have a 23 2.7 Badlands that’s been on the Ford Performance tune since new. After I tuned it I used Forscan to get rid of the double honk. Fast forward 2 years and I ordered the ZFG tune so I’m looking to return to stock with the ProCal. When I try the ProCal says “Ecu read is invalid” and obviously the operation fails. I haven’t used the ProCal since the initial tune. Any ideas? No ZFG for me until this is solved.

I had the same issue before going to ZFG. My procal also wouldn't let me return to stock. I just reprogrammed my Bronco with the stock calibration using FDRS, which wiped the procal tune out.

I'm sure this probably doesn't help much, since most don't have access or know how to use FDRS, but going to a dealership in this case to have them flash it back to stock might be your only option.

I does help in that at least there’s an option, although not a preferred one. Thanks for your input.

I do hope someone chimes in with a less expensive solution. Lol

Call Ford Performance, it is part of the tuner to be able to go back.

Agreed. That will be step 2 if I don’t find a solution here. Step 3 is the dealer.

Is there any chance this is a result of Forscan?

Question:
Did you ever update your ProCal after your initial install of the tune?
If so, at one point there was a bad update that was pushed by Ford performance that corrupted the unit.
Send an email, they may call you back relatively quickly.
They can correct The issue with the ProCo if you got a computer.

Not that I recall, no. It’s been sitting in a box since I initially flashed the tune.

So a little progress. Still no luck with the ProCal. Sent an email to FP and no response, although it was Friday afternoon so I get it. I called 2 dealers just to verify they’d flash the factory file should I need to do that and was denied. Both said not with a 10’ pole. I decided to ask ZFG if flashing over the FP tune was an option and to my surprise they said it wasn’t an issue.

Cowards...seriously they know they simply don't have the knowledge and experience to pull it off with any certainty - IT just ain't their thing, and Ford's somewhat chaotic entry into the "software enabled car" has not helped.

I tried to explain that’s it’s just like flashing an update to a regular ecu, but they didn’t care. Also, the lady at Causeway Ford in Nj sucks.

At the expense of jumping the gun as I haven’t even loaded their tune yet, whoever I’ve been talking to at sales for ZFG has been excellent.

Yeah, I had a lot of dumb questions for them upfront and during the tuning process itself. Adam at ZFG was pretty spot on for what to do and try.

if you're still stuck with no options, i'm in staten island, i paid for a year of fdrs recently, to flash to stock from whipple tune before zfg. I'll be happy to help, to play it forward for all great response i've had from adam at zfg.

You did en ecu swap or did you just flash the stock Ecu?

I appreciate that, I’m 5 minutes over the outer bridge. If there’s any hiccups I’ll hit you up.

Flashed the stock ECU.

Turnaround time, cost, and overall effort made going that route my best option. I won't kill chat with the whole backstory, but if you are on the fence for off-the-shelf tuners versus the full write/tune, it is like buying a tailored suit versus what dress clothes Walmart has.
