Connecticut is a tax you to death state. In addition to the registration, as RagnarKon noted you also pay personal property tax on vehicles based on their value. The rate you pay is determined by your towns mill rate. Regretfully the cost for my bronco is even more than what RagnarKon paid as I live in a high tax town.

If there is a silver lining... the property tax you pay goes down the longer you own the vehicle. This upcoming year my combined property tax & registration renewal bill will be around ~$820. So... $200 cheaper than it was previously.

The history of why we have property taxes on vehicles is complicated, but this is effectively the price we pay by being the only state along the east coast without toll roads. (Even though the property tax goes to the municipality and not the state.)

This is very similar to Maine only ours is affectionally called excise tax

We have vehicle property tax AND toll roads in VA.

Registration is $70 and tax was $1147 (goes down each year).

PA is only $45 plus tax for registration on the "station wagon" it's registered as. I live in an emission exempt county, so no additional costs.
