I swapped out my OEM spark plugs this weekend and #1 cylinder plug looked like dog crap w/ what almost looks like rust scale. Anyone have any thoughts on a cause? Rest of the plugs look fine IMO.

Hmm. Following. Not really sure what could cause it if it's otherwise been running fine.

I'd say lots of short trips and not getting up to temp, but the other plugs all look fine.

How many miles on those plugs? 2-4 do look pretty decent.

No short trips to speak of other than occasional moving around the yard...for the most part 20-30 mile trips minimum so fully warmed up. At 15k miles it's been running fine, no codes and not running rough. I can't say that I've ever seen this condition...dry and scaly.

What fuel brand do you use ?

I’m not really overly worried by the appearance it would be interesting to monitor over time.

only controllable things are fuel and oil ….

Since day one I've only used Shell 93 octane. I'll probably pull it out and have look next oil change.

any hesitations or misfires? If not may not be anything to worry about, but that is interesting

Nope, was running fine, no error codes, no hesitation. The only reason I was changing the plugs was to install one-step colder plugs that come with the Panda Power Module. Only other odd thing was that #2 plug was just barely tight but the plug looked fine.

On big CAT natural gas cat engines, it's not uncommon to see variations on how the plugs look across cylinders, but those are large 12 up to 20 cylinder machines. Outside cylinders always tend to look different than inner cylinders. Just hard to get a uniform temp and air/fuel distribution when you have a very large intake area.

I wouldn't think that would be an issue with an i4 though, but I haven't had the engine apart to look at how the intake manifold is set up. Could be as simple as fallout from the EGR tends to hit Cyl 1 disproportionally from the other cylinders - that would have a lot of condensation in it as well as oil mist.

I've seen that scaly rust looking stuff before, but it's usually on units that don't get brought all the way up to temp, or sit for long periods without a block heater - so condensation settles out and causes rust. Usually will burn off so long as it isn't excessive.

Also, let me know what you think about those plugs. I'm coming up on 50k and was considering changing plugs out, but haven't made up my mind yet. Yours apart from #1 look great and I may just put it off longer.

I was thinking possibly the EGR scenario as it's really the only thing that makes sense. I'm going to pull it next oil change to see how she looks.

Will do. I only had a chance to put 50-ish mile on yesterday but can't say I noticed any difference. My first time using them, most say they are great but only good for 10k - 20k depending on how regularly you are into high boost pressures.

I pulled my plugs at 100,000kms/62,000mi and they all wore evenly (looking like your 2-4). That being said, I’ve had a catch can on it since day one and run a can of Seafoam through it every 10-15,000kms/7,500mi.

Do you have any additive habits that might be contributing?

Nope, no additives and have a catch can for the last 10k miles as well. I'm not too concerned as the electrode looks fine...just scratching my head what could be the cause.

At least your cylinder 1 spark plug didn't look like mine when I pulled it. The engine was fine, can't say so much for the turbo which died 9 months later.

Always remember to check torque specs.
