Right. This is where I'm interested in the private route assuming a victim had the time and $$ to pursue if they wanted to. If you had a MAC, you would think a private attorney could send Ford legal a letter with the information and see what comes back.

I guess moral of the story is if your driveway is oriented like this, get a good resolution camera and mount it to the mail box post looking back at the house.

In fact, if someone were really riled up, take some business cards to all the fast food drive throughs and donut shops nearby and say call me with license plate number and you'll get $20.

So this was also my thought... though it would be cool when its convenient to you I REALLY don't want the government/authorities to have any more access to anything than they already do. We've seen Tesla use their vision system to double as a security system and arrests from that subsequent data. If we can agree the .gov shouldn't have limitless access or a back door, should an individual with a police report and for argument sake, a MAC address from a Ford modem that pinged off your router the same date and time when this happened, be able to request a VIN for that vehicle if available? It's really no difference than if someone walked through a Walmart parking lot getting VINs and plate numbers. With those two pieces of info and paid search, there's a ton of info available that can pretty much ID the registered owner.

My point is a good chunk of evidence is already there and with a police report, pics, dates and maybe a MAC address, is it reasonable to think Ford should have a way to get this data. What if it was a homicide or terrorism case and all of the same data was available. Should Ford be compelled or would this be a sufficient threshold we could agree the .gov has the standing to ask for it?

Very slippery slope but the closer we get to our data being nothing more than something for companies to exploit for profit or bad actors to use for their entertainment or extortion, the less any shits are given about the "victim" or concern for seeking justice. Not all crimes carry the same weight but the less emphasis that is put on these sorts of crimes, the more it's going to keep happening.

People have stolen shit from us for decades and almost none of them have been caught. I have a particular problem with thieves and the type of personality and psychopathy it takes to give no f's about other humans, only themselves and their self centered needs. These people are to me, complete shit bags.

So...I assume you've checked with all your neighbors to see if their door cams / Ring doorbells had no viable license plate images? You'd be surprised where those cameras are pointing. I assume this guy hit many houses in the area on that date/time. I'd make a police report and also contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service on any mail theft rings working in the area. They get citizen complaints about mail thieves all the time and these victims often have video porch evidence. Maybe they've already identified this turd.

Also, take a screen capture of the Bronco and shitbag porch pirate and drop it off at some local dealerships in the area to see if any Service Managers recognize the douchbag or Bronco. Wildtraks are not cheap. Unlikely they will want to get involved but a gift card reward goes a long way. Develop those human sources....

Last thing you can do is get on Facebook and contact local Bronco clubs/groups in area. Someone will recognize this turd and then you can spend as much time as you want ridiculing this pathetic little worm.

Our last break-in the dumbass took my wife's purse out of her car (why it was even in there overnight is another topic) and proceeded to use all the cards at a gas station 2 blocks from us, and clearly identified on their cameras and ours. Real genius. But when you live in an area soft on crime, absolutely nothing happened to him, so I guess he got the last laugh.

The process to get that kind of data for the police is a court order or warrant. That's how it's supposed to work. However, there are cases where the Patriot Act, doorbell cameras, etc were used for warrantless searches. There have also been cases of third party data brokers selling access, and api endpoints and web pages giving form-based access to searches that were "mysteriously" left open and accessed by the authorities. Courts have not always agreed that the third party data can't be bought by the gov't. Is it better that sometimes the good guys lose or win?
