I have no doubt your fuel economy went up but whether it’s due to ASS or due to cooler temperatures and the engine getting a bigger pop from colder air in combustion remains to be seen and would be hard to prove either way. What I do dispute is the reason they incorporate it on the vehicles in the first place. I believe that has everything to do with emissions and nothing to do with fuel economy. Maybe a Ford engineer can jump on and help us answer that question.I will dispute this claim.
ASS doesn’t engage at outside temperatures of 90° or more, so it rarely had ever shut off the engine in my Bronco for the first 4 months I owned it (I live a few miles from the sun). As soon as the morning temps cooled off enough, and the ASS started engaging at the 23 traffic lights I drive through on my daily commute, my gas mileage jumped up.
And a month later when the afternoon temps dropped enough for the ASS to start engaging on my way home, another jump in gas mileage.
I do understand that the ASS is way more annoying on the Auto tranny compared to my manual, so I don't mind all the people in Autos disabling it. But on the manual, if I know I am not stopping long (like stop signs), I just don't release the clutch and ASS doesn’t engage. And since the clutch starts the engine back up, and I have to hit the clutch to get going anyway, there is no more of a delay to get going than just the normal delay of having a vehicle that needs to be put into gear manually each time you stop.![]()
