Windshield wipers are driving me crazy!!!

I've owned 2 Broncos and not experienced this issue. Admittedly I haven't driven in heavy snow yet, but I've driven in heavy rain for extended period (30+ minutes) and moderate snow without issue. Does it only happen on certain settings?

Did they have to tear apart the dash to get to the motor?

No, it was accessed from under the hood in the cowl area.

It never happened on my 22 BL. I traded that in for a 23 WT and it does it. It happens when you put them in slow or fast settings- not intermittent settings. I’ve had mine on fast in a downpour and they slowed to a crawl. Instead of focusing on the road I had to turn them on and off numerous times to get them going again. PITA and dangerous.

Actually, it does slow down in the intermittent settings too. The three drops setting is 1 oscillation per second and will also slow down to 4 1/2 seconds per oscillation. I was going to buy a replacement motor (about $130) and change it myself if I could not get it replaced under warranty.

OK...so I know from previous posts that there are many Bronco owners who are in the same boat as me...our windshield wipers, when on low or high continuous setting will, after about 40 seconds, stop working or revert to intermittent.

This first happened to me when it was raining heavily on the highway and scared the hell out of me!!!

My dealer and Ford have both come back with the same response and that the windshield wipers on the Bronco are "smart" and will slow down if they experience resistence to prevent possible damage to the motor...resistance apparently includes "heavy rain or snow"...so the time when you actually need to windshield wipers to be working they will slow up...CRAZY!

I'm just interested to know if anyone has managed to find a solution?

I drove 4 hours yesterday in the rain (2 hours each way). During the 1st two hours, the rain intensity wasn't steady so I had the wipers on the intermittent setting. When the rain got heavy, I changed them to high. They would only stay on high for less than a minute, so I had to keep manually turning the knob down and back up as others described. It was very annoying.

However, on the way back, it was raining hard the whole time so I set the wipers on high right away. They stayed on high the whole 2 hours! It poured for 2 hours and the wipers never missed a beat.

I can't explain it. The only difference is that when I had them on intermittent for a while and then switched to high, they wouldn't stay on high. I tried it a dozen times and they would always revert to intermittent in less than a minute.

When I set them.on high right away they stayed there.

The people not understanding the benefits of RainX are kinda funny. Try it; you'll like it... no matter how great your wipers are. One of the joys in life is driving in the fast lane with your wipers on low or intermittent while there's people pulled over on the shoulder because they can't see out their windshield because it's raining so hard.

I agree Rainx is fantastic and I use it on my boat as well. However, this is a brand new Bronco with a safety hazard built into it and it needs to be corrected. I have a case number started with Ford and I will keep you all posted with any progress.

Yes, after I took the service tech for a ride while it was raining and showed him what it was doing, they replaced the motor under warranty.

My 23 Base is doing the same thing as described only in the low setting. I haven’t called the dealer
Yet to make an appointment. Our 21 Diamond has had zero issues.

I’m still waiting so no first hand experience here.

However the more I read about windshield wiper issues the more I think owners should start reporting this to NHTSA.

Filed my report over the weekend after noticing it first hand! I would recommend that everyone do the same so that Ford will do something about it. At this point, I would NEVER let my wife or kid borrow my Bronco if there's rain in the forcast out of safety concern. I know enough now that when the wipers fail, I can click it up one to get them working for about another 2 minutes.
