Manual transmission scraping noise / grinding sound

Just started noticing this grinding issue myself with these cold mornings. Called my local dealership to book a service appointment and I was told there is a year long wait list for transmission repairs. Anyone here if ford is going to make an official recall on this issue? I can’t wait a year for this issue to be fixed. What’s going on @Ford Motor Company ?

Confirmed just now that yes, if I tilt the rear of the vehicle down (in my case the dash indicated a 3 degree slope) that the grinding noise at stationary idle goes away.

There is either a lack of lube getting to the rear of the case, or the noise is caused by an endplay issue. One of you guys should try overfilling by a quart or so to see if that makes a difference (I would however be very suprised if it did).

Very interesting! Going to wait and see what the @Ford Motor Company rep can do for me on this forum. They reached out and ask for additional info. Hope they can push forward my year wait at my local dealership

They do zero, they say contact your dealer. I think they were basically just gathering info to see which vehicles it was affecting before they issued the TSB.

Big time bummer that they are backed up that far, Duarte was also closest dealer to me. Hope the noise doesn't start for my rig.

Replacing the actual synchros would be my last resort and I would not trust any dealer to do it. I can bet you that you'll end up replacing that transmission after that.

I would focus on the lubrication. That was my first thought when I realized the issue and saw how many people are experience the same thing in the same conditions. I would actually not be surprised at all if this fixes the issue. Furthermore, if you drain the oil and if it's all clear then I wouldn't worry about any damage to the synchros. Focus on everyone that's saying tilting the car makes a difference.

The ZF 8HP transmission in the Wrangler had a similar issue with a friend of mine. By Jeeps manual the way you fill the transmission is absolutely the same way you fill it in a BMW application. The only difference is in the Wrangler transmission is tilted a significant amount. So rough shifting was completely eliminated just by getting the actual transmission leveled and filling it properly that way.

There has to be something else to this. If you had metal shavings or slight discoloration would be plausible from failed synchros. Black would be caused by something totally different.

I didn't get more info than that. I posted the info from the dealer receipt a couple pages back.

They replaced the transmission without question or hesitation

I’m going to replace my transmission oil with this before I have them completely tear down the transmission. It still meets ford spec. I’ll post some pics of the old fluid and let y’all know if it gets rid of the noise.
