Thread 'Hello and I need help with engine knocking issue (2.7L) Update 1'
https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/thre...th-engine-knocking-issue-2-7l-update-1.55816/

Here is link to my original thread…
@PF52Ranch— as soon as they found the metal in oil and in filter Ford told them no more digging to figure out issue with engine.. Same with the 2 transmission pumps. As soon as engineer heard them howling (whine is being polite) they said to replace and dig no further. SO I will never get true answers as to underlying issues.
Ford wants engine crated and shipped to wherever they take these failures..
[/QUOTE]
Thanks for the update. It can’t just ba a coincidence that two of you had identical sounding failures within hours/days of purchasing your Broncos. Makes you wonder how many Broncos never left MAP with the same problem.

To whomever is updating the list please add me— I know not a 21 engine but Iat 60 miles towed to dealer— metal throughout oil and particles in filter. They are replacing engine and 2 transmission pumps as well. In my possession for less then 7 hours. I know of another poster on site having engine issues and he just picked up his during same time frame so maybe a similar build week with engines/Broncos.
Thank you for your time.
Opening Post is not being maintained by anyone who knows what they're doing. The Table and Graphs have not been updated since July. The listed Hot Zone is out of date.

Is there a POC for this thread building the list? I think there is a bigger issue in 2.7 engines. The supposed new engines are doing same. NHTSA POC?
For NHTSA POC, have you filed a NHTSA report ? - see link here , copied from the opening post. You don't need the root cause of failure. Just mention "engine replacement" and mileage. Takes couple minutes.

This is a great thread and thanks to everyone who contributed so far.

I'm thinking of getting a used FE. They're not difficult to find. However, most of them likely have engines that were built during the 'hotspot'. I looked into one already and the engine was build in July I think (right smack dab in the middle of the hotspot).

Anyone have thoughts on how I might go about this? I was thinking of going on until I find one out of the late May to early September time frame. It's tough because I'm not going to pay 20k over MSRP, so even though they aren't too difficult to find, it's tougher to find one out of the time frame that's not way overpriced.
Why do you want an FE ? In this forum it seems the FE's builds have more problems than other trim series.

I was slated to get a FE originally but dealer sold it out from under me. So I sorta wanted to get one to ‘make up’ for it and I‘m interested in the disco. I guess I could get a 22 badlands since they have discos as well. Any thoughts on if the engine in a 22 has a better chance of not failing?

I spoke to NHTSA and filed as well as contacting Ford and requesting the BBB arbitration form. I waited 802 days from the time my reservation was converted to an order to getting this and I know I can never trust it No matter what they offer nothing will shake that feeling and every time I get behind the wheel I will wonder is it going to die in traffic, out in the woods, will I be in a location I can get it pulled over…..
I know people on here are saying warranty and thats what its there for but with only 60 miles and I owned it for only 7 hours prior to its demise thats a line of non sense no vehicle with a 63k msrp should last only 60 miles..

Wow you had an original FE reservation ? But crooked dealer hi-jacked it?
Then again maybe they did you a favor, maybe saved you from a '21 hot zone blown engine. Do you remember the blend date on the FE ?
Yes in general the '22 engines have been much better. Still occasional blown engines here and there but no big group of failures like we saw in '21. From this forum the '22 engines look about 20X more reliable.
In '21 the sta-bar disco also had lot of failures - electrical control module & mechanical replacements. Not sure how they're doing in '22

Then sell it
I would not own a dog, car or anything or stay married if it made me afraid for my life.

why do that to yourself?

are you forced to own it and more afraid for your life to sell it than to keep it?

Yep. Dealer refused to sell it to me. Complete pos.

The FE was built around end of October/beginning of November based on when I got the assembly line pic of it.

I’m Looking at a FE now that was also built around that time. Also found a badlands I like but it’s a soft top. I’ll have to think about it.

I’m not sure many of the FEs were too far out of the hot zone. However the one I’m looking at has over 8k miles. Maybe that’s a good sign?

First I am trying to get answers from those that have been down this path with Ford. I am working on avenues to see about getting it bought back…Second if you read any of what I wrote its still not even back in my possession. Kind of hard to sell when its got no engine or transmission pumps… Also your question is so badly worded it makes zero sense.

If you took the time to read through and realize these things just die at any given point when they fail you would realize that yeah if on a highway and this happens it could be lights out.

Also selling to a person you have to tell them issues and repairs— financial loss. I know if I heard it needed an engine and transmission pumps with 60 miles on it- Hard pass.

Being that your order isnt in and a 2.3 you chiming in when I am asking for what others in my position have dealt with as far as resolutions with Ford helps me how?

There are pros and cons to both tops but depending on where you live the soft top is nice. Easy to flip open and if you hit bad weather flip back. Friend has it and they love it. The windows are a little bit to learn but they have them on and off in minutes now.

Sorry to see a few more popping up. My 21179 July 21 built 2.7 is still humming along almost 8k on it now. Fingers crossed 🤞

. . and requesting the BBB arbitration form . .
Yes BBB Auto Line is a great option. You can let them arbitrate for you. Saves you a LOT of headaches

From the VIN# you can find out the engine ser#, or just look at the engine label if possible. Any engine build-date from 21266 and higher should be just as solid as the '22 engines. 21266 (Sept 23) was when they started using the new valves.

Good info. Thanks! I do see there were a few fails after that, but engines fail randomly for other reasons too (which could account for that).

So I’m thinking about this and wanted to get some input. I called Ford today to try to get the engine production date on the Bronco (which is at a dealer 2 states away. The dealer didn’t know how to find the engine serial number or seem to want to do it). So the person at Ford basically gave me the blend date as the engine production date. I can tell the blend date from seeing the window sticker. Sooo, that wasn’t right.

In another thread I see warranty work doesn’t show up on carfax. That got me thinking. What if the engine in this Bronco failed and was replaced, even if the apparent build date of Oct 22nd is after the hotspots (This assumes an Oct 22 engine build date makes sense with blend date in the first week of November).

So I called Ford again. This person told me they couldn’t tell how to get my engine build date. Then they started reading a number that sounded like The engine serial number. They then said there was a note there stating that they are not allowed to give out the number they had started reading. They never gave me that number (and I said not to If it was going to potentially get them in trouble), but I think it was the engine serial number. They were able to give me the build date of Oct 22nd for the engine though.

Another thing, is that this person told me that the prior owner had one of the 100k mile extended warranties on the bronco. Sure someone can purchase that, but that’s also the one Ford seems to give out to the people who experience engine failures. Things that make you go hmmm.

So does a build date of Oct 22nd make sense for an early November blend date? If so, I should be able to look at the Julian date on the engine actually currently in the bronco. If it’s different than the Oct 22nd date, then I can tell it was an engine replacement, right?

Any other way to figure out if the engine was previously replaced?

On a side note, I am learning TONS of stuff going through this process.

There are a few people on the forum who can find out the information that you seek. They are playing games with you by saying that they can't give you the information you want.

BTW, my 21180 motor is at 43k.
