If you're that worried about an emergency coming up at that moment, simply disable automatic updates, and only perform manual updates when you have a second vehicle available.

We can "what if" this to death, but being able to actually update vehicle software routinely is a feature, not a bug.
I'm going to pay zero attention to car updates just like I have for every other car I have ever owned.

A computer restart that takes a few minutes is reasonable but no car should ever be unusable for an hour for a software update. Not a what if. Just should not be designed that way.

You’re making this a way bigger deal than it needs to be. Calm down.

What do you do when your phone needs a 10-15 minute update? Buy a burner phone in case that 1 in a million emergency might come up?

Its more fun when it bricks the car.
Lol. Bricks the brick. I see what you did there.

Posting on a message board is not really "making a big deal" territory.

Don't go after me for pointing out what the Ford intern said.

And the phone thing, switch to a Pixel. Some phones, like cars, can do updates better.

They need to upload the training videos we took at the dealer level. It's important this is turned on so updates can load remotely. Take the whole data mining thing out of the equation. Ford is wanting to remotely load software fixes that we'd normally have to do during a service visit. A lot of this stuff is going to fix things in the background you may not even be aware of.

Updates will happen when they are switched on as in the video FMC posted. I don't know of any non-drivable updates for bronco at this time but if it downloads one, it will ask you to schedule it so it doesn't interrupt your schedule. From what I know, if a non-drive update is in process, it won't keep you from driving if you have to, it'll just fail and have to be rescheduled.

Could an update lock the vehicle or brick a module(s)? Yes. I has and will continue to happen even when it's done at the dealer. The VHR report will tell your service department if you're at the current level or if a newer version is available. As with software updates we've done in the past, there isn't a list of everything that's getting updated or modified. They'll give you a general idea of what the update included but won't get specific if they're fixing a line of code or something like that.

As much as I don't like the data mining that comes along with FP/Sync and the connected modem, I feel the importance of the updates, especially for safety concerns, outweighs the idea of them knowing what's going on in my vehicle or where I'm driving. At a minimum, turn updates on once a month for a couple of days just to give it a chance to perform the updates. You can also have the dealer check the VHR in OASIS to see if there are any pending specifically for your vehicle.

ETA: As many times as I've busted FMC's balls, I do feel this is important. It allows them (engineering) to see what's going on so they can address concerns earlier in the process. The longer this goes on and the more data they have, the better the experience will be for you which hopefully means fewer visits to the dealer for software updates. Yes, there is a possibility of bricking but they're going to be very selective about updates they push to minimize the chances of that happening. I've not heard of an OTA update bricking a Ford vehicle yet and would bet more have bit the dust in our shop than will out in the field.

Thanks for this. So it sounds like they will never do an update that stops you from driving the car without giving notice.

@Ford Motor Company needs to clarify that you can just stop the update at any time and it won't stop you from driving. I believe you but this is not clear from what the person just posted.

If it just stops and restarts later there is no need for anyone to care at all about scheduling any updates because they will just stop and happen later.

I remember when everyone used to complain about using flash drives to manually install updates, and bitching because Ford couldn't come up with a way to do unattended over-the-air updates...

People aren't happy unless they are bitching about something. I remember all the complaints about all the buttons on the dash before touch screens became a thing...and people bitching about that...FFS!

Depending on the update the vehicle requires, there are two installation processes:
Driveable Updates
  • Some updates can complete seamlessly in the background. They replace a part of software without impacting the rest of the system
  • SYNC 4 Technology is fully functional while the update is downloading
  • If the Automatic Updates are On, a message will appear in the in-vehicle touchscreen informing the driver of the update and if Wi-Fi is required
  • If Automatic Updates are Off, a message will appear on the in-vehicle touchscreen asking the driver to confirm the update and if Wi‑Fi is required
  • The update will automatically complete in the background. If consent or a Wi‑Fi connection is required, an icon will appear in the touchscreen's upper status bar
  • When the vehicle is restarted, an "Update Successful" icon will appear on the in-vehicle touchscreen. The customer can tap the notification icon to read details about the update or view details on the FordPass App or owner.ford.com
  • If the update fails or if Ford decides to revert to a previous software version, the system will go back to its previous version. Customers will be notified if the update fails, expires or is canceled in-vehicle
Non-driveable Updates
  • The majority of Ford Power-Up software updates will be considered non-driveable updates (parked with the ignition off). This means that the update will erase the system or module and replace it with the latest version of the software
  • The vehicle will not be driveable during this time and the update may take up to 45 minutes to complete. Any updates that may require the vehicle to be parked can be scheduled to take place when customers find it most convenient
  • When a recurring schedule is set, customers will receive an in-vehicle reminder notification at first key cycle within 24 hours of the update. The vehicle will display another notification two minutes before the update begins
  • Scheduling is required to ensure that the updates occur at a convenient time when the customer chooses and when the vehicle is not in use
    • If the vehicle is in use, the system will not update and will automatically postpone to the next scheduled time. Customers will receive a notification that the update was unsuccessful
    • If the vehicle is not in use, a “Preparing Updates” message will appear in the in-vehicle touchscreen and a two-minute countdown will begin. Customers will be prompted to exit the vehicle and lock it, as it will be disarmed during the updates
    • Preconditions may be required for certain updates. If the preconditions are not met, the customer will be notified and the update will not complete
  • When the vehicle is restarted, an "Update Successful" icon will appear in the in-vehicle touchscreen. The customer can tap the notification icon to read details about the updates
  • Customers can also check the status of an update in their FordPass App or on owner.ford.com

Manual Update System Details
Non-driveable Updates
NOTE: If Automatic Updates are Off, updates are not installed automatically and require the customer to review and approve each update. The vehicle may require important Ford Power-Up software updates, therefore, this method is not recommended.
  • When a new update is available, the customer will see an icon on the in-vehicle touchscreen status bar. To review the update, tap the icon for details to proceed
  • Once the update is reviewed, a notification will appear on the in-vehicle touchscreen with information about how long the installation will take. After that, an "Update Ready Install" icon is accessible on the status bar
  • The driver can tap "Update" on the in-vehicle touchscreen to begin installation
  • If the vehicle is not in use, a “Preparing Updates” message will appear in the in-vehicle touchscreen and a two-minute countdown will begin. Customers will be prompted to exit the vehicle and lock it, as it will be disarmed during non-driveable updates
  • Preconditions may be required for certain updates. If the preconditions are not met, the customer will be notified and the update will not complete
  • If the updates were completed successfully, an "Update Successful" icon will appear on the in-vehicle touchscreen when the vehicle is restarted. The customer can click the notification icon to read details about the update
